Join us tonight at Saint Mark Church in Rockville for Avril Smith & Becky Warren, with friendsJohn Seebach and Stefan Custodi
Avril Smith
Avril Smith is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. She started playing guitar at a young age and is widely recognized as a highly accomplished electric and acoustic guitarist and mandolin player.
Avril plays in several bands, including the alt-country band The Great Unknowns with award-winning songwriter Becky Warren, the Americana string band Big Chimney, which won first place in the DCBU and Watermelon Park festival band contests, and a roots rock band called The U-Liners featuring the amazing Joe Uehlein. Avril was a founding member of the bluegrass band Della Mae.
Becky Warren
Becky Warren writes for and fronts the alt-country band The Great Unknowns. The band's first album, Presenting the Great Unknowns, found its way into the hands of Indigo Girl Amy Ray, who declared it "Excellent songwriting in the Americana tradition—really one of the best things I have heard this year" and released it on her independent label, Daemon Records.
But after that album, the band all but disappeared for five years as Becky struggled with a marriage that had become troubled when her soldier husband returned from Iraq with PTSD. When the marriage ended in 2010, Warren realized she had a lot to say, and wrote furiously, penning 12 new songs about love, loss, and the life-altering effects of war (the band's second record Homefront). She won the Grand Prize in the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Songwrting contest.
Writing Homefront and speaking with veterans and their families about the songs on the album inspired Becky's current project—a series of songs about an Iraq vet and his girlfriend. The songs are based both on Becky's personal experience and on the stories of Iraq vets and their families.
