Grade 5 Teacher Position
The William E Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts is seeking a dynamic and energetic teacher interested in teaching Grade 5. Our school's mission is to "foster a safe, creative, enjoyable and culturally sensitive learning environment for all students." A WEDJ PCS teacher is responsible for planning and facilitating effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction to accelerate each student's academic, artistic, social and emotional achievement in alignment with the school's educational philosophies, policies and procedures. A WEDJ PCS teacher must believe that all children will learn and be prepared for post-secondary education.
The Grade 5 teacher needs to be an educator who loves children, plans as a team player, and takes responsibility for designing curriculum that meets the needs of the WEDJ community. WEDJ teachers need to:
- Regularly and frequently evaluate student progress using a variety of assessment methods including cumulative projects, standardized ANET tests and the gathering of portfolio samples of student work;
- Use data to analyze students' academic strengths and deficits, to drive individualized instruction and to design academic interventions as needed;
- Create and foster a positive learning environment by maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment with current artifacts and resources for student achievement;
- Create and maintain effective classroom management policies that are age-appropriate for students;
- Communicate monthly with families to share academic progress and develop a supportive home-school relationship;
- Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to meet the demands for a comprehensive knowledge of each student's progress;
- Exhibit positive rapport with students including the appropriate use of verbal, written, non-verbal communication and tone of voice;
- Submit pacing guides and main classroom assessment tools in addition to end-of the year professional portfolios to the principal and the mentor review team.
Qualifications:
- Meet the appropriate grade-level and subject-area requirements to be considered "Highly Qualified" according to District of Columbia public charter schools under the No Child Left Behind law;
- Bachelor's degree from a accredited college or university, Master's Degree a plus;
- Experience working with children in an urban, educational setting;
- Pass a criminal background check, as required by law;
- Computer Literate, experience with PowerSchool, Promethean technology a plus;
- Background in the visual or performing arts a plus.
