Organizational Profile and Mission
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (National Board) is the nation's pre-eminent standards-setting board in teaching. Since 1987, the National Board has certified more than 110,000 accomplished teachers through the rigorous performance-based, peer-reviewed process of National Board Certification. The National Board is pursuing an ambitious agenda to scale Board certification throughout the teaching profession, with the aim of strengthening a differentiated, performance-based career continuum for teachers and, ultimately, building teaching into the true profession it deserves to be.
Role Description
The National Board is seeking a dedicated professional, preferably with experience in education, to join their Strategic Projects team. To catalyze efforts to strengthen the professional career continuum for teachers and advance the teaching profession, the National Board has launched a number of strategic projects to serve as learning lab for the broader field. The Analytics Manager, Strategic Projects will be involved in building and supporting data analytics for these projects, including (a) overseeing correlated collection and integration of data from project teams, (b) conducting analyses on a wide variety of data sets, (c) collaborating with project teams to coordinate and carry out analytic tasks, (d) producing documents and visualizations for internal and external communications, and (e) maintaining collaborative relationships with external partners who are engaged in or supportive of our analytics activities. This position will particularly focus on "analytics for improvement," wherein simple yet effective statistical methods are used for rapid decision-making by practitioners. This position will work in partnership with members of the Research and Knowledge Management team, who oversee organization-wide data related to board certification and board-certified teachers.
The Analytics Manager, Strategic Projects position is located in Arlington, VA and will work closely with National Board staff and consultants located in the Arlington, VA headquarters as well as in other locations in the field, and will report to the Senior Manager, Strategic Projects.
Major Responsibilities
Analysis and Reporting
· Conduct "analytics for improvement" by producing simple yet high-leverage metrics for decision-making
· Generate reports for internal and external partners
Data Management
· Liaise with Research and Knowledge Management team which manages organization-wide data sets related to board certification and board-certified teachers
· Manage data entry, manipulation, and merging for data related to strategic projects
· Construct datasets for strategic projects, especially from external data sources, including strategies to automate processes and make them well-documented, replicable, and accessible to a wide audience
· Oversee survey development and administration for strategic projects
· Coordinate and facilitate data collection, reporting, and instrument reviewing processes with external and internal partners for external data related to strategic projects
Communications and Coordination
· Maintain respectful, productive, and service-oriented relationships with external partners engaged in strategic projects
· Collaborate with internal partners within the Research and Knowledge Management team to both build from existing analytics resources and bolster organization-wide data infrastructure
· Compose documents (reports, one-pagers, and blog posts) and give presentations that succinctly communicate complex analytical ideas and findings to internal and external audiences
- Produce data visualizations that are meaningful for non-researchers
- Create and maintain Tableau dashboard
- Contribute to training partners to adopt and use Tableau to monitor progress and inform improvement
- Proofread reports, surveys, and assessments
- Other duties as assigned
Experience and Skills
· Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred, in education, psychology, or other quantitative social science research field, including research experience in one of the above fields beyond academic preparation
· Excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including experience and comfort with talking to non-researchers about data
· Knowledge of or interest in improvement science and using data to shape improvement
· Knowledge of and commitment to improving the U.S. K-12 education system
- Interest in the National Board's mission to strengthen the teaching career continuum and advance the teaching profession
· Comfort with ambiguity and able to juggle the demands of a busy, frequently changing plan of work in a professional manner, while exhibiting sound judgment
· Approachable, positive, and able to work with diverse constituencies, including all levels and areas of the organization as well as external partners and collaborators
- Brings an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to be part of a collaborative working culture and efficient and effective work structures
· Facility working with data in a variety of formats
· Ability to conduct descriptive analyses and to present results in a variety of written and visual formats
· Adept with MS Excel and able to learn new software quickly
· Experience with correlation/regression analysis
· Familiarity with tools for web-based and/or publication-ready data visualization (R, Tableau, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, HTML/CSS/Javascript, Google Apps)
