Communications Specialist, ASCD

ASCD, a leading provider of high-quality professional development resources for educators, is seeking a Communications Specialist to focus on advancing key association initiatives that will grow audience awareness and positive visibility.

This role encompasses the following functions:
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates PR/communications/media strategies, campaigns, and tactics including brand/mission promotion, message development, member engagement, and media outreach. Builds and cultivates relationships with media and other key stakeholders. Leads proactive media outreach, pitching, and inquiry fulfillment.
  • Writes clear, concise, persuasive and engaging communication pieces (news releases, blog posts, tweets, Facebook posts, op-eds, columns, and presentations) across multiple communication platforms.
  • Drives communications initiatives from concept to execution.
  • Creates content for official social media channels of the association.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with co-workers, internal and external clients and vendors, in the use of written text for print, web, video or blog publications to produce high-quality communications.
  • Provides guidance to internal stakeholders which may include coaching clients on effective communication. 
  • Represents ASCD at external meetings such as association meetings and policy briefings, press conferences, and other similar events.
  • Manages special communications projects or initiatives, such as annual report, annual conference, social media outreach, or others as assigned.

This position requires a degree in communications or journalism and a minimum of four years of demonstrated experience in a communication-focused role such as writing and reporting, media relations or public relations. Demonstrated experience copy writing and editing articles, press releases, policy documents, website content, social media, presentations, video and speeches.

Experience with a variety of communication mediums using best practices to generate high-quality communication materials. Knowledge of web-based technology and demonstrated use of social media tools and media tracking, research, analysis, and targeted communications is also required. Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform via written, verbal, and visual media.
