The Aspen Education and Society Program provides an informed and neutral forum for education practitioners, researchers, and policy leaders to engage in focused dialogue regarding their efforts to improve student achievement, and to consider how public policy changes can accelerate progress. Through our meetings, analysis, commissioned work, and structured networks of policymakers and practitioners, the program develops intellectual frameworks on critical education issues that assist federal, state, and local policymakers working to improve American education.
Function:
The Research Assistant works closely with the program director, staff, program co-chairs and our core consultants and advisors to deliver high-quality seminars, site visits, and publications for education leaders. He/she routinely interacts with other Aspen Institute staff,- as well as education practitioners, policymakers, researchers, foundation program officers and academics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Planning and assisting with seminars and site visits for the Aspen Senior Congressional Staff Network; duties may include assisting in the creation of research-based briefing books, developing data graphics/research summaries, coordinating participant logistics, and capturing key lessons from meeting proceedings for follow-up dissemination to the network.
- Planning and assisting with seminars and retreats for district-level leadership networks involving senior staff from urban school districts; duties may include preparing meeting materials and PowerPoint presentations, and capturing key lessons from meeting proceedings.
- Assisting in mining relevant literature to keep program staff abreast of developments in the field; staffing team professional learning sessions; and preparing research-driven presentations on behalf of program leadership.
- Assisting in knowledge capture processes for all program convenings, including follow-up conversations with meeting participants; assisting in tracking the impact of program publications and convenings; and compiling impact metrics for program reporting.
- Managing the editing and printing process for program publications and tools.
- Additional responsibilities may include: Digital Resource Library (DRL) database management, program website development and management, occasional communications support, grant proposal development and reporting and general support as needed in producing high-quality seminars, site visits, and publications for education leaders.
Knowledge, Education and Experience
- Passion for improving the life chances of young people and a belief that dramatically improving education is an important strategy in this pursuit.
- Ability to canvass educational research and weigh credibility of research and evidence.
- Master's degree or equivalent experience in education and/or policy.
- Excellent attention to detail, personal organization and time management.
- Ability to efficiently and effectively gather, evaluate and synthesize research concisely, as well as an ability to analyze policy, including a willingness to fairly consider different perspectives and opinions.
- Ability to successfully work in fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously under pressure.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills; experience and ability writing and editing professional correspondence, including ability to communicate with senior school district administrators.
- Proficient in MS office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. Experience with Adobe products a plus.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively within a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including a desire to learn and the ability to be flexible.
- Ability to exercise professional discretion, judgment and diplomacy.
Salary commiserate with experience. Non-supervisory position.
