[dcab-l] Movies (Kind of) About BG

Coming to Silver Spring, Maryland, next weekend:
Details and tickets: www.afi.com/silver/films/events.aspx

1. IN SEARCH OF BLIND JOE DEATH: THE SAGA OF JOHN FAHEY
"The guitar-playing equivalent to William Burroughs or Charles Bukowski." –Pete Townshend
Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, John Fahey is considered a foundational figure in American folk music, and is known as the father of "American Primitive Guitar." As both musician and musicologist, Fahey made a fundamental contribution to the understanding and appreciation of such music genres as Delta blues, Appalachian bluegrass and New Orleans jazz. This documentary combines interviews, performances and archival footage with animation in a kinetic, musically-charged tribute to a tremendously influential composer, guitarist, author and provocateur. Interviewees include Pete Townshend, Joey Burns of Calexico, Chris Funk of The Decemberists and renowned radio personality Dr. Demento, aka Barry Hansen.
Day/Time next weekend TBD

I just saw this. It was very informative.

2. CBGB
Washington, DC-area exclusive!
One night only! Fri, Nov 1, 9:00
In person: co-producer (and Silver Spring native!) Andre Danylevich
Starring Alan Rickman, Donal Logue, Ashley Greene, Malin Akerman, Johnny Galecki, Rupert Grint, Justin Bartha, Bradley Whitford, Estelle Harris, Joel David Moore, Freddy Rodríguez, Richard de Klerk, Bronson Adams, Taylor Hawkins, Kyle Gallner, Stana Katic, Ahna O'Reilly and Mickey Sumner
CBGB follows the story of Hilly Kristal's landmark New York club from its conceit as a venue for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock n roll and punk. When Kristal (played by Alan Rickman) had difficulty booking country bands in his club on the Bowery he opened his doors to other kinds of rock music. Kristal had one demand of the acts he booked; they could only play original music. No top 40s, no covers. It was the credo he lived by: support the artist at whatever the cost. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk, giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police.
