I am reaching out to ask you to invite the parents you serve to the Second Annual DC Parent & Family Engagement Summit: Passport to Excellence, hosted by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) as "one of the most comprehensive and commendable" parent and family outreach efforts in the nation, Passport to Excellence is a day-long event designed to empower, inform and inspire over 500 parents and families in the District of Columbia by providing vital information and resources to promote successful educational outcomes for their children.
Nearly two years ago, a group of concerned parents, classroom and special education teachers, students, administrators, non-profit partners, political and business leaders, early childhood educators and residents collaborated with OSSE to develop a plan to ensure that all students in the District of Columbia have equitable access to a public education that would prepare them for academic success. Resulting from this partnership (and by federal mandate), OSSE developed a new State Education Plan that was approved by ED for OSSE to implement and execute in early 2012. As a result, the inaugural DC Parent & Family Engagement Summit convened in September 2012 reaching an audience of over 450 parents and families in OSSE's first-ever event designed for our most important partners: parents and families.
At this year's summit, parents will have the opportunity to attend workshops on topics like bullying prevention, understanding state report cards, becoming their child's first teacher and how to use OSSE's exciting new resource LearnDC (http://www.learndc.org/). They will hear first-hand how the feedback they gave last year has been implemented into the State Education Plan and talk to community organizations and providers about programs and resources available for students and families. There will be an on-site children's activity room so that children will have a safe, nurturing and fun environment while parents are learning.
Please see the attached flier for online and phone registration information.
