Community Outreach Intern

Overview

Turning the Page (TTP) (www.turningthepage.org), a dynamic non-profit organization that helps DC public school parents become more active and effective participants in their children's education, is currently seeking a Community Outreach Intern. The intern will gain valuable experience and skills in community outreach and family engagement, focusing on the Latino community in DC Public Schools. Outreach projects will support the implementation of Community Nights, TTP's cornerstone family engagement initiative.

 

The intern will be guided by two TTP Partnership Managers and shall share responsibilities with AmeriCorps VISTA members. Internship projects will be focused on TTP's family outreach and engagement efforts at the Raymond Education Campus. Raymond EC is located in Ward 4, near the Columbia Heights and Petworth neighborhoods of Northwest DC. The school teaches students in Pre-School through 8th grade with a majority Hispanic/ Latino community. The Community Outreach Intern will have a vital role in recruiting for and executing evening workshops for Spanish-speaking families in order to further TTP's goal of expanding student learning opportunities and providing valuable educational resources for DC public school families.

 

TTP's internship position gives a selected student the opportunity to receive valuable training in the fields of community outreach and family engagement; as well as skill development in areas such as writing, research, and program recruitment.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for the following duties:

·         Research on the topic of community outreach practices, with focus on Latino communities

·         Recruitment phone calls to Spanish-speaking families

·         Modification of materials/activities for Spanish-speaking families

·         School visits to assist with recruitment prior to evening workshops

·         Aiding with facilitation of parent workshops and/ or student mentoring during Community Nights

 

Required Qualifications

·         Currently enrolled in college /university as an undergraduate or graduate student

·         Native speaker or highly proficient in Spanish

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate well with colleagues and community members

·         Extremely well organized

·         Excellent writing skills

·         Strong computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher

·         Flexibility and team player attitude

·         Interest in/ knowledge of the public education system and the role of the community and public in improving public schools

Semester: Fall 2013 – Spring 2014

 

Desired Schedule:

For the internship position, time will be split between working at the TTP office and Raymond EC. Must be available to work some hours during the 9am-5:30pm business day and occasional evenings from 5pm-8pm. Also must be available to attend occasional Saturday workshops. Position is part time.
 
Stipend provided.
