Position Description
School Readiness Consulting seeks educators passionate about helping adults provide high quality educational experiences for young children. Child Development Associate Mentors will support the professional development of educational aides as they work toward the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. This part-time, temporary position runs from July 16-September 22.
This summer, 80+ educational aides are training for their Child Development Associate Credential. We are looking for an experienced, bilingual educator to serve as a mentor to a cohort of 40 candidates. Cohort members include parents and current educational aides. Mentors are responsible hosting office hours while instruction is occurring to check in on candidate progress, and will work individually or in small groups with participants as they develop their ideas to present on paper in a professional format. Mentors will work with candidates as they develop a professional resource file, a collection of materials that early childhood professionals use in their work with young children and families. This "working resource" will contain their Autobiography (a written statement of 300 words about their life and why they want to work with young children), as well as six Statements of Competence based on the six Competency Goals of the CDA:
1. To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment
2. To advance physical and intellectual competence
3. To support social and emotional development and to provide positive guidance
4. To establish positive and productive relationships with families
5. To ensure a well-run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs
6. To maintain a commitment to professionalism
Successful mentors need not be familiar with all the intricacies of the CDA, as the instructors will cover the content. Mentors will be provided with training materials in advance to become familiar with the content for each section, so they can best support CDA candidates. Mostly, candidates will need someone to help them prepare and create these documents, someone to read through their drafts, and to provide guidance on their writing. Mentors will also support occasional field trips and guest speakers.
The CDA training will take place in DC (site TBD), starting the week of July 16.
CDA candidates will meet:
- M-Th from 1:30-5:30 for 5 weeks, from July 16-August 17
- Tues and Thurs. 6-9 pm on Sept. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27
- Saturday, July 28, Sat. Aug. 11 and Sat. Sept 22 from 9-2:30
As a mentor, you need not attend entire sessions, as we are currently establishing the mentor time commitment. At minimum, mentors must commit from 2:30-5:30, M-Th, July 16-until Aug. 17, and from 6-9pm on Sept. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18. 20, 25, 27. There will be no instruction for the last two weeks of August, and additional September mentoring times are to be determined. Note, mentors will need to provide occasional phone consultation in the late afternoons or evenings. Work on Saturday, July 28, Saturday, Aug. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 22 is required.
Qualified applicants need to be passionate about working with adult learners, be extremely flexible in schedule, and need to sign an agreement for the entire project. Mentors will earn $20/hour.
Interested candidates should email a resume, and three references to jobs@schoolreadinessconsulting.com
