[YEP-DC] More research positions at Child Trends

Child Trends has two additional positions (on top of the 4 research assistants and 2 research scientist positions):

RESEARCH ASSISTANT (4 positions, 2 are for Spanish speakers)

Child Trends, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research center, seeks to improve outcomes for children by providing research, data, and analysis to the people and institutions whose decisions and actions affect children.

 

General Description

Working as part of an experienced team, research assistants support all aspects of the research process and learn how social science research is designed, implemented, and disseminated to affect policies, programs, and practices that serve children and their families.

 

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities may include gathering research, drafting research summaries, recruiting study participants, collecting and cleaning data, performing basic data analyses or syntheses, producing tables and graphs, assisting in the development and administration of surveys, conducting interviews, assisting with organizing meetings and taking notes, preparing presentations for conferences, and writing sections of reports and research briefs.

 

Qualifications

·         BA or BS in a social science or related discipline such as sociology, demography, psychology, economics, or education is required. (Note: Applicants with a Master's degree or above should apply for more senior positions, e.g., Analysts, Scientists)

·         Fluency in Spanish (for 2 of 4 positions available)

·         Excellent writing skills

·         Strong analytic skills and logical thinking

·         An ability to demonstrate great attention to detail

·         An interest in and enthusiasm for topics related to research and policies about children and families

·         Research or significant practical experience in any of Child Trends' research areas

·         Demonstrated successful performance at least one of the following areas:

o   Quantitative research skills including surveys, data cleaning, analyses, and software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Stata)

o   Qualitative research skills including interviews, focus groups, analysis, and software (e.g., NVivo)

o   Superior writing and editing skills

o   Presentation, data display, and document production skills

o   Technology or programming skills relevant to our work

RESEARCH SCIENTIST

General Description:

Child Trends has an opening for a Qualitative Research Scientist on projects focusing on reproductive health, relationship dynamics, and ethnic minority families in particular Latinos. The scientist is responsible for planning and conducting qualitative research in consultation with colleagues; designing research approaches and select appropriate methods of data collection and analysis; leading the development of study protocols; overseeing and participating in data collection activities; performing analysis;  and writing and presenting findings.  Broad knowledge of qualitative methods and strong conceptual skills are needed.  May function as a principal investigator or project manager for research projects.
 
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops or participate in developing research topics, studies and designs.
  • Works independently to conduct/oversee all phases of qualitative research.
  • Analyzes and interprets data, draws conclusions, identifies implications for policy, program or practice.
  • Prepares reports and presentations and writes manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Takes a lead role in proposal development.
  • Oversees and trains junior staff in data collection activities and analyses; develops and implements quality control procedures for data collection and analysis
  • May serves as a project director and supervisor to junior staff.
  • Develops IRB materials and oversees data security and confidentiality procedures.
  • Some travel required.

Qualifications:

  • Strong qualitative research skills and substantive expertise in sociology, demography, public health, family or related field needed.
  • Excellent writing skills essential.
  • Experience in social policy research experience, on projects that integrate qualitative and quantitative research methods, and with proposal writing and fundraising are a plus.
  • The position requires Ph.D.-level knowledge and one to two years of post-doctoral job experience. Applicants with masters' degrees or other relevant degrees will be considered, but additional experience will be preferred.

(SENIOR) RESEARCH PROJECT MANAGER

General Description:
Child Trends currently has openings for Research Project Managers (RPM) or Senior Research Project Managers (SRPM).  RPMs need both research and management expertise.  An RPM is expected to understand and be able to manage all aspects of research projects including the selection of the research approach and methods, the development of data collection instruments, and the writing of the final reports. The RPM is also responsible for overseeing budgets, staffing, and timelines for multiple projects and setting priorities for the team members. 

 

Child Trends seeks RPM or SRPM in three research areas:

·         Early childhood

·         Youth development

·         Fatherhood (family structure and re-entry projects)

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages several projects
  • Oversees staffing and staffing projections
  • Develops and manages budgets and budget projections
  • Develops team members expertise
  • Budgets and manages proposals
  • Takes a lead role in proposal management
  • Works independently to conduct/oversee all phases of research
  • Develops IRB materials and manages data security and confidentiality procedures
  • May serve as and supervisor and mentor to junior staff
  • May be required to travel some

Qualifications:

  • Strong research skills or 5+ years of field experience in one of the three research areas above
  • Demonstrated excellence in the management of multiple, simultaneous projects is required
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of large projects and project teams
  • Extensive experience planning and budgeting work (research project preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and skilled at managing up and down
  • Demonstrated ability to work and prioritize effectively in changing, fast-paced environments
  • Experience with proposal writing and fundraising are preferred
  • BA or BS required, Masters or PhD strongly preferred

Senior Research Project Managers offer more expertise and experience than RPMs.

CHILD TRENDS - RESEARCH ANALYST (Spanish Speaking)

General Description

Working as part of an experienced research team, the Research Analyst will be responsible for conducting assigned parts of social research projects. The analyst will do the following: collect qualitative and quantitative data; manage large data sets; assist in the development of the research approach; and report research findings orally and in writing. This position requires these activities be performed equally well in Spanish and in English.

  

Typical Responsibilities and Duties

1.          Collects qualitative data through interviews, focus groups, and other methods;

2.          Analyses qualitative or quantitative data;

3.          Writes research results; assists in writing proposals and preparing papers for publication. 

4.          May be called upon to present results to clients, sponsors, or the press.

5.          Acts as task leader in projects and supervises research assistants and support staff.

6.          Reviews and writes critical summaries of research literature and/or public policy.

7.          Acts as liaison with subcontractors.

8.          Works independently and provides support for research design and writing.

  

Qualifications

·         Fluency in English and Spanish

·         Master's degree or ABD in a social science or BA degree plus 3-5 years experience in a relevant research discipline, Ph.D. preferred

·         Knowledgeable about evaluation and research methods

·         Demonstrated proficiency with qualitative or quantitative data collection and analysis

·         Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail 

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills

·         Must be available to start in July or the first week in August
