*****
In Fall 2012, The Future Project will work with principals and faculty in three cities to introduce a new character into American high schools – the Dream Director.
Embedded in The Future Project's partner schools, Dream Directors mobilize members of the community (the Future Corps) to activate students as innovators and schools as dream incubators. Student leaders (Future Fellows) identify their passions, goals, and aspirations and, with the support of the Future Corps, use them to build projects—clubs, campaigns, events—that engage their peers and lead to game-changing cultural shifts in schools.
Dream Directors are social intrapreneurs who seek opportunity, spot possibility, and create bold structures that transform schools from the inside out. They reflect the best that community organizers, teachers, life coaches, partnership-builders, and motivational speakers have to offer.
For the 2012-2013 school year, The Future Project is looking for Dream Directors for schools in New Haven, CT, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
Imagine a position in a school designed to motivate young Arianna Huffingtons to take on the position of Editor-in-Chief for their school paper, to coach a group of brilliant teens to build the next Facebook, or to bring a student and teacher with individual dreams of climbing Mt. Everest together for their first rock climbing lessons.
Dream Directors are skilled in getting the right resources, opportunities, and encouragement to the right people at the right time. They are accountable for three core elements:
- School Transformation: Dream Directors imagine and create structures to support student-led movements – including curriculum design, after-school activities, town halls & assemblies, workshops, and more.
- Leading the Future Corps: Dream Directors manage a community of Future Coaches, partners, and other volunteers who enter a school and bring additional resources to help bring dreams to life.
- Managing the Future Fellowship: They also manage a Future Fellowship for students, providing one-on-one coaching, curating opportunities, and implementing programming that helps them create passion-driven projects that impact the school at-large.
Of course, none of this is possible through the efforts of a Dream Director alone. Rather, the Dream Director is charged with creating a robust team and support network that includes the school's principal, teacher allies, other Dream Directors, interns, a personal board of advisors, parents, and a Future Council made up of student leaders.
Dream Directors demonstrate competence in:
- Intrapreneurship: A record of innovating in schools, institutions, companies and/or organizations.
- Inspiring Leadership & Motivational Speaking: The ability to mobilize people through a powerful & bold articulation of vision, initiative, a series of calculated risks and creative problem-solving.
- Developing Potential in Youth & Adults: The ability to recognize the skills, talents and aptitudes of others; experience in helping others (especially young people) embrace failure and learn from their mistakes; a willingness to push others beyond what they believe to be their limits; an ability to provide opportunities that shift people from a sense of powerlessness into the realm of possibility.
- Fostering and Sustaining Partnerships: The ability to identify, seek out, establish, and harness relationships with people and organizations that have the potential to turn dreams into realities.
- Managing and Facilitating People and Teams: Proven success in effective team-building and management of large numbers of people; proven success in overseeing the big picture and details of a large operation; an understanding of how to create and maintain synergy; and understanding of how to attract, spot, and cultivate talent
The Future Project supports Dream Directors in their charge by providing the vision and strategy for growth and sustainability and on-going training and resources. We also provide tools to mobilize a network of volunteers, develop them into effective dream and project catalysts and systems, structures and interventions designed to help students turn dreams into action and transform their schools.
