DC Public Education Fund (the Education Fund) seeks a dynamic Communications and Events Manager who
will play an integral role in engaging private sector and general public donors to support the strategic reform
efforts of District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). The Communications and Events Manager will provide
strategic direction and implementation for all communications, public relations, events and marketing initiatives.
Background:
DC Public Education Fund is the independent not-for-profit formed to direct private philanthropy in support of
strategic reform in DC Public Schools. We work in partnership with DCPS leadership and the philanthropic
community to accelerate improvements, sustain excellence and ensure accountability through our initiatives. This
work includes attracting critical funding resources, managing key public-private partnerships, and acting as fiscal
sponsor for all grants made on behalf of DC Public Schools.
Core Responsibilities:
Communications
Thoroughly understand and be able to communicate about the Education Fund, its mission and policies,
culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, finances, and strategic plan;
Work alongside senior leadership to develop and implement organizational communications strategy;
Write and coordinate content and manage distribution of organization's e-newsletter and annual report
and other marketing materials;
Public Relations & Community Outreach
Develop productive relationships with media contacts and coordinate with DCPS' communications team to
support media outreach;
Manage social media outreach and content streams for organization;
Write and distribute press releases, talking points, op-eds, etc.;
Coordinate outreach to community organizations, including the development of the Young Professionals
Committee of the Education Fund;
Events & Marketing Initiatives
Manage and execute special events, including large fundraising galas (1,000+ participants), donor
cultivation events, and program-related events;
Solicit and manage sponsors and sponsor benefits for donor relationships;
Manage event and fundraising committees;
Develop and manage event donor database;
Other
Develop and manage project timelines and operational plans for projects and initiatives;
Negotiate and manage vendor agreements as necessary, including budgeting and expense tracking;
Serve as a strategic internal partner and lead organizational initiatives;
Assist in other activities as necessary.
Requirements:
Candidates should have a passion for education reform and a belief that all children deserve an excellent
education. The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
Bachelor's degree;
Three to five years of event and marketing or communications experience;
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Exceptional analytic, strategic, and organizational skills;
High level of personal responsibility, initiative, and motivation;
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven, fast paced team environment;
Experience developing solid working relationships with senior staff members, high-level volunteers and/or
donors;
Successful experience managing multiple projects, systems and procedures;
Strong computer and related technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and
PowerPoint.
This position requires strong strategic, interpersonal, oral, written, and project management skills. Direct
experience in the education, development, and/or philanthropic sectors is a plus, but not a requirement.
Salary will be commensurate with background and experience. DC Public Education Fund is an Equal
