[YEP-DC] After School Teaching Opportunities (PAID)

Ascendly is looking for after-school LEGO engineering teacher/coaches in the Fairfax VA area

You will go to various schools in your area and will, using our comprehensive and refined lesson plans and the supplied materials, instruct a small group of kids in the ways of how to think like an engineer. In Jr. Structural Engineering, you'll use LEGO bricks to lead exercises in constructing skyscrapers, bridges, castles, etc. During each lesson, you'll also cover other parts of the Engineering Design Process, such as brainstorming, planning, and refining. In Jr. Electrical Engineering, you'll go through exercises that teach basic circuit design using Squishy Circuits, Snap Circuits, and Solderless Breadboards.

Compensation: $40-70 per class hour, depending on experience, class size, and parent feedback. The typical class lasts about 1:15 and requires about 15 minutes for setup and clean-up, with a typical course lasting eight sessions, meeting once a week. Instructors can teach at schools close to where they live/work. Most classes start right after school, usually around 3:30.

The ideal candidate will possess, or be working towards, their teacher certificate. Other successful candidates will have experience working with kids and be able to show a commitment towards teaching or the advancement of STEM. A background in engineering is not required, but would be a nice plus.

Ascendly is a social enterprise (with both a for profit and a non-profit arm) dedicated to bringing engineering to kids, from Kindergarten to 6th grade.

To Apply

Download and fill-out the application via (http://www.ascendly.com/outside/EmployeeScreeningForm.txt) and email the application and your resume back to me. I'll respond to every application.

Our Approach
============
The Ascendly Jr. Structural Engineering course for Kindergartners, for example, embraces the belief that if given fun and engaging projects, even the youngest students learn to think like an engineer. It transitions them from simply following instructions to becoming problem formulators and problem solvers. The course also encourages students to design their own use cases that tell a story of how an aspect of the project will eventually be used and to present those stories to the class. While still mindful of the limitations and opportunities of working with such young students, the course teaches engineering vocabulary, construction skills, and the engineering design process.

The students have the engineering design process driven home by experiencing visceral and laugh-out-loud consequences. For example, one step of the design process is the ask questions to better understand the problem and to articulate use cases. Initially, the kids tend not to ask very many questions, but an early project, involving building a high-rise structure, has them experience those logical ramifications. When they fail to determine the geographic location of the final structure, they are surprised to learn the building is meant for Florida. Their curiosity increases when I talk about the hurricanes that Floridians have to live through. The students find it hilarious when the teacher unveils the shop-fan and starts toppling the less-sturdy creations. By the last class, all the kids eagerly explore the problem-space before they start building, just like a good engineer.

Job Requirements
================

General
-------
* see Ascendly.com
* You must have a passion for working with kids and have teaching experience.
* Bonus points for being a fan of LEGO bricks
* You must be reliable, nice, blah, blah, blah
* You do NOT need to be an engineer. Our very verbose lesson plans and training will walk you through what you need to know. If you are passionate and good with kids, then you'll be great.

Admin
-----
* You must have a safe place to store class materials (which might simply be at the school, or in your trunk, or at your home)
* You must have access to reliable transportation - public transportation will probably not work well enough

Kid Safety
-------------
* You must get a background check
* You must get fingerprinted
* You must provide references
* You must be a college graduate or, for exceptionally motivated individuals, a current college student.
* You must pass a quick online child protection course

Hey, what about my kiddo's school?
--------------------------------
Would you like to see LEGO engineering at your school? Our biggest challenge is in providing high quality teacher/coaches. If you can commit to coaching a class, along with at least one assistant coach, then we can train you! Just contact me and I'll work with you and your PTA to bring it to you school.

More about Ascendly...

Mission
========
Ascendly starts with curious kids and gives them the desire, the skills, the confidence, the competence, and the resources to build cool stuff. Kids will graduate thinking like an engineer, talking like an engineer, building like an engineer, and solving problems like an engineer.

The program coaches/ teaches students to think like an engineer, to solve engineering challenges, to learn engineering skills, and to master the engineering vocabulary.
We also encourage parents to sit in and co-build during all or part of each class.

History
========
The program began in early 2009 and has been serving several schools in Fairfax County, DC, Bethesda - and we've recently expanded to the outer reaches of Metro-DC.
