Thanks Mike. I used Amtrak to get to Raleigh last year, and it worked out great. Amtrak Carolinian from DC Union Station to Raleigh. The train was on-time, or only slightly late, and a nice ride through some pretty country...lots of river sightings if that floats your boat (heee!). As I remember, it didn't cost much to upgrade to business class (2 x 2, the 1 X 2 seating configuration is gone on almost all routes these days), but it's perfectly do-able in coach. The Raleigh train station is within walking distance of both the Mariott and the Sheraton, but taxis are available if you're lugging a bass.
But then, I'm an unapologetic train fan and never drive anywhere if I can help it.
