Well . . . . that was fun! We had twenty people out to pick at Saturday's afternoon jam in Haymarket. Lasted about 2 1/2 hours! These were not all Bluegrass Club members and so we had a chance to meet and pick with some new people. THAT is one of the great things about open jams.
-- Hope y'all had a good holiday weekend in memorial to those who gave so much, if not all, to protect our precious heritage. God bless the USA and the hope it brings to the world! Differences between us, you bet. But, on balance, a great influence for good.
THURSDAY night (in three days) the Bluegrass Club will meet again at 7:00 at the old Pace school in Haymarket. Visitors are welcome to stop in and check it out. THIS IS NOT A JAM. If you want to join, just pay the dues ($50.00 for the session ending in mid-July but prorated now to $42). We break into bands and learn one tune per meeting. Five more meetings to go this session. 14600 Washington Street.
Congratulations to "Thoroughfare Gap" one of the bands formed from the Club. They have played a couple of gigs and are now having handout cards printed because people want to know how to contact them for other gigs.
All bands take notice: I can arrange for you to use the Pace grounds for extra practice sessions if you do not have a place to rehearse. If the picnic tables are open (back corner adjacent to the east parking lot) you are invited to use them on these beautiful long evenings. (No booze.)
I had a long discussion on Friday with Tom Nichols, the owner of Deja Brew in Dominion Valley's Market View Square. (Tom came out to Saturday's jam and played harmonica. He brought his son with him - an impressive accomplished guitar picker.) Tom will go to great lengths to have our bands come into the Deja Brew to perform, work up tunes, etc. Tom is a sound and lighting guy also and has all the equipment necessary to assist your band with on-stage performance technique. He is a great resource! Use the opportunity. Stop in and talk to him!
So this Thursday, as I have previously made known, we will work up "Don't This Road Look Rough and Rocky" in the key of G. As I also pointed out in a previous email, you can find this tune on YouTube and you can check out the lyrics and chords at Bluegrasslyrics.com and Cowboylyrics.com. You will also find the tune in the Bluegrass Fakebook by Bert Casey (available at Contemporary Music in Haymarket or online at Amazon).
This tune is not fast though it should not be a dirge. It is tender and heartfelt with a chorus you can sing very strongly with some great harmony. How many different arrangements will we come up with on Thursday? Stay tuned . . . . .
Finally, Club members all have the googlegroup available to you. If you want to send out a (non-commercial) blast concerning an event or some Club news, you can use the group. Address your email to bluegrass-club-two@googlegroups.com.
Now, by all means, go pick!
Bruce
