[YEP-DC] New YEP-DC Blog Post: Should we celebrate GradNation's latest report on high school grad rates?

Recess is happy to introduce a new team of bloggers, who will write about everything from school climate and culture to education politics. Connie Ward, a school counselor in DC, starts us off with a post about absenteeism and how trumping it early in life can pay off later.

"We have reason to celebrate. The national high school graduation rate has reached 80 percent, the highest in American history," Connie writes. "But don't put on your party hats just yet." That's because 1 in 5 students still aren't graduating with their peers, "and for students of color and low-income students, even fewer do." But there are many ways educators and counselors can instill good habits in children (as early as prekindergarten) that could ultimately make the difference between a high school diploma -- or not.
