Mundo Verde Special Education & Inclusion Teacher: Spanish Language
Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School is an Expeditionary Learning School and the District of Columbia's first school dedicated to education for sustainability and biliteracy. Mundo Verde is a purposefully culturally inclusive school founded to empower students to reach their full potential and give them the skills they need to work together to solve sustainability challenges. Mundo Verde's mission is to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate stewards of their communities. Mundo Verde creates a nurturing environment that supports social and emotional development as well as academic excellence. The school was recently named a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School and was awarded the 2013 Mayor's Sustainability Award for demonstrating outstanding achievement and commitment to sustainable practices. Mundo Verde is also an Ashoka Changemaker School and a Flamboyan Foundation Family Engagement Partner School.
Mundo Verde, which opened its doors in August 2011, currently offers preschool through second grade (adding third grade in 2014) and will add one additional grade each year through fifth grade. As an Expeditionary Learning school Mundo Verde promotes self‐discovery and critical thinking, encourages teamwork, builds character, and capitalizes on children's innate spirit of adventure through hands‐on, project‐based learning. Responsibilities Include:
Classroom Tasks
- Assumes responsibilities for demonstrating achievement of individualized education program (IEP) goals and improved academic performance of students with disabilities
- Develops an individual profile for each student using existing assessment data and informal testing and observation and ensures that general education staff have copies of the IEP-at-a-Glance form listing goals, accommodations, and modifications
- Provides a continuum of special education instructional opportunities for students to work one-on-one, in small groups, and as a class within pull-out or push-in settings, as appropriate, in support of the general education curriculum
- Employs multisensory teaching strategies based on an understanding of student strengths and weaknesses and learning styles
- Monitors and supports implementation of goals in inclusion classes, collaborates with related service providers and monitors service delivery, monitors behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and provides accommodation/modification support
- Works in collaboration with all general education teachers as a technical expert to support personnel in the process of addressing individual student behavioral concerns (observation, teacher rating questionnaires, goal-setting and execution)
- Refers students to the IEP team to develop interventions for students demonstrating disciplinary concerns, truancy, and/or academic failure or to further assess struggling students in all areas of a suspected disability.
Individualized Education Plan Tasks
- Encourages parent partnerships and maintains positive communication with parents/caregivers regarding student progress, success, and difficulties
- Contributes to writing both initial and updated IEPs based on present levels of performance and developing goals that relate to curriculum standards and content
- Reports achievement of goals and objectives at the end of every advisory period and issues quarterly progress reports
- Collects end-of-the-year academic data in preparation for the annual IEP meeting
- Schedules, coordinates, and chairs requested and annual IEP review meetings in collaboration with the special education coordinator, parents/caregivers, related service providers, and general education teacher(s)
- Maintains a portfolio of student work samples, anecdotal data, and classroom observation information
- Maintains compliance on IEP specialized instruction time through SEDS for allocated caseload of students
- Promotes family involvement in education through partnerships between the schools, parents, other organizations, agencies, parent centers, and community-based family partners
Case Management Tasks
- Shared responsibility for case compliance and student academic progress as documented through both academic and compliance on SEDS
- Shared responsibility for reviewing and analyzing all student information and developing a corrective action plan for students who need additional testing and/or a change in services
- Shared responsibility for conducting triennial reviews in collaboration with the special education coordinator and IEP team and refers students in need of requested reevaluations and/or triennial reviews to the IEP team to develop a student evaluation plan
- Maintains special education files and ensures that all evaluation recommendations are followed up and completed
- Provides requisite monthly data to special education coordinator
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (elementary and/or special education background preferred)
- Passed Special Education Praxis
- At least one year of classroom experience working with students with special education needs
- Experience helping students achieve an academic or developmental goal
- Commitment to principles of biliteracy, sustainability and inquiry‐based learning
- Proven ability to work as a member of a team
- Willingness to support teachers and students in a range of capacities
- Experience in language immersion, charter schools, active/inquiry‐based learning models or Education for Sustainability preferred
- Fluency in Spanish; additional English competency preferred
- Ability to maintain language fidelity with students at all times
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development
- A growth mindset
