Sela Public Charter School (Sela PCS) opened in 2014 to offer Pre-‐K to 5th grade children of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in the District of Columbia the opportunity to achieve academic excellence in a safe, nurturing environment that focuses on Hebrew language immersion, promotes the value of diversity, and provides essential skills for taking action in the world.
Sela PCS's vision is of a community of learners striving towards excellence, where children of all backgrounds and abilities are valued members of a safe, nurturing community, in which differences are appreciated, and families are active participants in school life. Through exposure to the Hebrew language and contemporary Israeli culture, students learn broad lessons about how to appreciate and participate in cultures that are different from their own.
Head of School Position Description:
Sela PCS is seeking a talented and energetic educational leader to assume the Head of School position beginning in July 2014. This seasoned educator will lead the school community as it expands to Pre-‐K (4) through 2nd grade in its second year and will ensure that the school meets its students' academic, cultural, and socio-‐emotional needs each day. The Head of School will select, coach, and provide ongoing professional development to the school's teachers and instructional leaders, including the Director of Hebrew Curriculum and Instruction and Director of Special Education. In addition, this school leader will oversee financial management, compliance, and other areas of school operations with the support of the Director of Operations and Compliance.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with an unwavering belief in the Sela PCS mission and possess substantial early-‐childhood and elementary school instructional expertise, successful school-‐based people management experience, belief in language immersion as a component of overall academic rigor, passion for urban education, and commitment to doing whatever it takes to lead this start-‐up school to long-‐term success. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a small but growing unique school model – the first of its kind in the country -‐ and expand the horizons of hundreds of DC's public school children each year.
Head of School Responsibilities:
The Head of School is responsible for the following:

Ability to lead, inspire, and sustain a diverse group of teachers and leaders and create collaborative relationships;

Oversee and lead the continued development of all aspects of the school's instructional program from classroom management to immersion programs to extracurricular activities;

Lead the recruitment, retention, and development of high-‐quality staff who are aligned to the school's goals and academic expectations;
-
Ensure financial solvency for the school, including budget oversight;
-
Oversee daily operations as well as compliance with local and national regulations;

Collaborate with the Sela PCS Board to set and measure progress on realizing the school's vision, mission, and goals;
- Serve as the public face of Sela PCS with parents, students, funders, and other external audiences.
- The Head of Schools will report to the Sela PCS' Board of Directors.
Head of School Qualifications and Experience:
-
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in urban settings that results in student achievement gains.

Teaching and/or leadership experience in urban elementary education with diverse populations of students. Experience in charter schools and knowledge of the DC community are preferable.

Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree in education, non-‐profit management, business or a related field preferred.

Successful prior direction of curriculum and instruction programming at a school-‐wide level, including experience in balanced literacy and the workshop model.

Experience in fiscal management and budget oversight.

Ability to attract new educational resources.

Track record of success in attracting and developing exceptional teams.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent and advocate for Sela PCS to a wide variety of stakeholders.

Flexible and innovative with a demonstrated ability to improvise, take risks, and implement new initiatives.

Personal commitment and dedication to the mission, vision, and values of Sela PCS.
Knowledge of and passion for language immersion programs, Israel or Hebrew are a plus.
