Director of Online Communications and Outreach

Position Summary
The Director of Online Communications and Outreach will be responsible for strategic planning and execution of all online content and communications for the Children's Defense Fund, including websites, email, e-alerts, blogs and social networking profiles.  The Director will work with Development, Field, Policy and State/Regional Office staff to produce innovative online content that captures and builds constituent interest in the Children's Defense Fund's mission and issue advocacy campaigns.
The Director will work with other departments on developing advocacy strategies and special projects to be implemented through online and offline resources and at CDF's conferences.  The Director works to get CDF's message and priorities out through multiple channels and directs the department's on-line creative projects.  The Director is responsible for managing the communications budget and supervising employees of the CDF Web Team, including the Webmaster. The Director is responsible for the supervision of Communications Web Team interns. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Communications and Outreach.

Key Responsibilities:
• Coordinate with Field, Development, Freedom Schools, Youth Leadership Development and Policy Departments and State/Regional offices to execute online components of integrated public education, advocacy and fundraising campaigns.
• Managing online fundraising campaigns.
• Create compelling written and multimedia content for regular communications to CDF's email supporters and for CDF's main website – www.childrensdefense.org – and affiliated websites.
• Foster a sense of community among CDF supporters through an integrated advocacy-fundraising campaign that moves supporters up the "ladder of engagement," regular email communication, and the ability to join in the "conversation" through online communities (social networks, interactive tools in which they contribute content, etc.).
• Develop and execute a strategy for building traffic and recruiting new list members and donors through online media, search engine optimization, keyword marketing, reciprocal linking and other tactics.
• Supervise the Web Team staff and communications web interns..
• Coordinate with other departments to develop tactical campaign strategies and messages around CDF's priorities.
• With Vice President of Communications and Outreach lead the organization's creative development through video, online interactive components, print ads, and other mediums.
• Assist all departments with campaign strategies, assist the field team in developing trainings for young adult organizers and other advocates that will help accomplish our legislative priorities and equip them with the knowledge of how to manage a successful campaign for children.
• Assist with developing press lists and outreach to bloggers.
• Ensure continuity of all online communications (website, email, online events, blogs, etc) to reflect and advance the goals of CDF's organization-wide communications strategy.
• Analyze website traffic to provide data for CDF's advocacy work, community building and fundraising.
• Provide online communications support and information on industry best practices to State Offices.
• Collaborate with all departments and state offices to improve and update their online constituent database(s) of supporters and advocates.
• Stay abreast of industry best practices, latest technology, and successful (and unsuccessful) tactics and apply for more effective online campaigns.

Qualifications:
• Grassroots organizing and political savvy – experience planning and executing online and offline advocacy campaigns to move people and influence individuals in positions of power.
• Minimum of 5 years experience with online advocacy and social networking communities.
• Demostrated experience managing successful online fundraising campaigns.
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Strong track record of taking the lead on creative projects.
• Familiarity with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, PhotoShop, search engine optimization and other Web development tools.
• Familiarity with social networking platforms and emerging tools for online communication and collaboration.
• Experience with e-CRM (e-Constituent Relationship Management) software platforms and online action tools.
• Experience with CMS (Content Management System) software platforms, specifically Blackbaud's Luminate online.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff on all levels of the organization.
• Minimum education requirement, B.A.
• Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with daily deadlines.
• Commitment to social advocacy and CDF's mission to be a voice for all children in America.

Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools
Proudly rooted in the American Civil Rights Movement and the courageous efforts of college students to make a difference, the CDF Freedom Schools® program provides quality out-of-school time enrichment for children and youth ages 5-18 that boosts motivation to read, develops positive attitudes toward learning, cultivates self-esteem and connects the needs of families to local resources.  Through partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, faith institutions and colleges and universities, we offer energetic learning environments with purpose and high expectations for six to eight weeks in the summer and year-round in targeted regions.  The CDF Freedom Schools Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute prepares accomplished adults and exceptional college students and graduates to implement the five components of our model: (1) high quality literacy enrichment, (2) parent and family involvement, (3) civic engagement and social action, (4) intergenerational leadership development, and (5) health, mental health and nutrition.   Since 1994 when CDF Freedom Schools were piloted in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina, approximately  1000,000 K – 12 children have had a CDF Freedom Schools experience and over 10,000 college students have been trained to deliver this child and youth and empowering model.


Summary Statement:
The Associate Operations Coordinator (AOC), in collaboration with the CDF Freedom Schools Coordinating Director, plans, organizes, coordinates, promotes and facilitates all CDF Freedom Schools program orientations, trainings, meetings, and events.  S/he manages all operational and logistical components of annual trainings, meetings, and events, including partner/sponsor organization staff, CDF staff, speakers, and vendors.  The Associate Operations Coordinator monitors and plans event timelines and budgets; serves as the CDF Freedom Schools online registration platform (i.e. Reg. Online, Cvent, and/or Convio) manager; analyzes meeting and training evaluations; collaborates with the CDF Communications Department to ensure printing and publication of all relevant constituent materials for program trainings, meetings, and events; coordinates planning and national execution of the annual National Day of Social Action in collaboration with the CDF Policy Department; and prepares participant demographic reports  on participation outcomes following all trainings, meetings, and events. The AOC also collaborates with national program staff as needed on related programmatic tasks and plays a pivotal role in updated participant databases containing key constituent information. S/he develops agendas for all programmatic convening/events and reports directly to the National Director.


Primary Responsibilities/Scope of Work
• Develop comparative data analysis of budgets as it relates to training programs;
• Assist Senior Evaluations Manager with all pre- and post-training evaluations and implement improvements as needed;
• Manage relevant  database(s) identifying all training participants and vendors that support each event;
• Edit training manuals and agendas;
• Conduct site visits for summer and after-school site monitoring;
• Communicate frequently with sponsor organization staff, schedule travel, book hotel accommodations, prepare materials for visit, etc.);
• Work with the CDF Communications Department to develop social media strategies and campaigns to launch at EBCPTI events;
• Oversee all event-related conference calls with external partners and serve as the main point of contact for over 150 partnering organizations;
• Coordinate and edit quarterly department newsletter;
• Serve as main contact and manage the preparation and detail for all CDF Freedom Schools trainings, meetings, and special events, including training manuals and the two-year event calendar and documents timeline;
• Create and manage online registration procedures, communicate with all training participants, and generate and manage attendance rosters.  Arrange accommodations and travel for event staff, consultants, speakers, guests and volunteers;
• Create and manage the database identifying all training participants and vendors that support each event;
• Create budget projections and maintain accurate financial records for each event to monitor costs;
• Prepare final summary reports for all trainings, including data on attendance, health-related incidents, evaluations, disciplinary actions taken and other pertinent data for the record;
• Participate in self-assessment and performance evaluation;
• Respond to other CDF Freedom Schools duties as assigned.


Core Competencies, Qualities, and Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree with at least 3 years experience in one or more of the following: program support, project management, systems processing, events planning or meeting coordination;
• Meticulous attention to detail and knowledgeable in the use of online registration software;
• Ability to comprehend, negotiate, and edit contracts and communicate effectively with outside vendors;
• Proactive, thorough, and capable of following through with a project to completion;
• Excellent scheduling, planning, and logistical coordination skills;
• Dedicated work ethic and professional acumen;
• Expertise coordinating logistics and adapting to challenging circumstances;
• Capable of anticipating needs and developing contingency plans;
• Understanding of and commitment to the vision of the Children's Defense Fund and the CDF Freedom Schools program;

• Demonstrated ability and willingness to meet deadlines as a competent team player in a fast-paced working environment; must handle multiple projects simultaneously, take initiative and work independently and collaboratively;
• High level of maturity and ability to interact successfully with diverse constituencies;

• Strong organizational skills and knowledge of general office and administrative procedures;
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to improving the lives of children and their families;
• Flexible and willing to travel when required (approximately 40% of the year).
