[dcab-l] 1st Song of Virginia: Oh Shenandoah

Music Lovers:

The next 5 songs concern the Commonwealth of Virginia. The

former state song Carry Me Back to Old Virginny  was rescinded

in 1998,  and not yet replaced.

One new state song option is Oh Shenandoah,  in reference

to an American Indian of the same name. The Shenandoah River,

in Virginia, is evidently named after this American Indian.

Oh Shenandoah  was first printed as part of Capt. Robert Chamblet

Adams'  article  "Sailors' Songs", in the April 1876  issue of The

New Dominion Monthly.

It been recorded by a number of artists including Tennessee Ernie Ford,

the Statler Brothers, jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, and Bruce Springsteen.

Oddly enough,  this Virginia song also mentions "the wide Missouri",

from which the song was probably spread by Missouri River flatboatmen.

This "All Mixed Up" classic, is from the CD:  Live at Coolfont
