[YEP-DC] MENTORING opportunity in Washington DC!

Greetings!

We are writing you today to tell you about an opportunity to become a mentor with the YouthBuild Public Charter School Mentoring Program; we are currently seeking dedicated youth development volunteers to join our team for the 2012-2013 school year, kicking off later this month.  We are holding 2 orientations in August and will likely schedule others in September.  Please see below for more information about our school, our program, and about the orientation we'll be holding this month.

ABOUT YOUTHBUILD

YouthBuild PCS is an independently-operated public charter school in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of northwest DC.  As a part of a national network of over 300 sites, YouthBuild PCS was originally a program started in 1995 with the Latin American Youth Center, establishing itself as an independent entity in 2005.  YouthBuild PCS is one of only a few alternative high schools in the District of Columbia; we serve young people ages 16-24 who have dropped or aged out of traditional high schools, and we assist them in obtaining their GED, gaining access to employment and community service opportunities, and building their sense of self-worth and self-love.  Below you'll find our mission:

YouthBuild Public Charter School (YBPCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment.  YBPCS prepares students for post secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs.  YBPCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process.  Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

ABOUT OUR MENTORING PROGRAM

Part of YouthBuild PCS' mission is to provide positive experiences, role models and influential mentors for our young people, and we are fortunate to receive a grant from the Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention to fund this effort.  Our mentoring program links a student (mentee) with a committed community member over the age of 23 (mentor), and guides the relationship building process through monthly activities, meetings, and beginning and end of the year ceremonies.  We are currently in our second year of the program and throughout this school year, mentors and mentees have enjoyed getting to know one another; mentees developed a stronger sense of support and community building by connecting with their mentor.  Our program kicks off with mentor orientations, applications and interviews from now through the beginning of October, and I'm writing to invite you to our next New Mentor Orientation.

Please consider attending an orientation and applying to become a mentor.  There is about a 4-6 hour per month time commitment, and it's not to be taken lightly.  If you're not sure this is for you, please forward this along to anyone you think might be a good fit (please forward this along regardless of your interest!)   You can take a look at the attached flyer to learn more our school and our program, including the time commitment, roles and responsibilities of the mentor, and more.  If it sounds at all appealing, please consider attending one of the upcoming orientations to learn more about what it would take, and what it would mean, to become a mentor for one of our students.
