Peace Runners is a group of 4th -8th grade students and their coaches will train for and run/walk in the 2nd Annual Run, Walk or Roll Against Bullying 5K Race sponsored by Advocates for Justice and Education.
Peace Runners is an opportunity for your students to have fun, make friends, be a leader, build their self-confidence, stay fit, and take a stand against bullying.
Students:
We are enrolling 250 students from all DC schools in grades 4th – 8th grades to join Peace Runners by September 1, 2012.
The Commitment: Peace Runners teams will consist of 6-8 students who will meet twice a week after school for 1.5 hours with their coach to train for the 5K Race. Training will start the week of September 3, 2012. Training will consist of both run/walk exercises in addition to activities that promote self-awareness, self-management, and healthy relationships.
Coaches (Teachers/Administrators/Staff):
We are enrolling 30 coaches to lead teams of 6-8 students in 4th-8th grades. No prior running experience is required.
Coaches are teachers, staff or administrators from all DC Schools. You will have the opportunity to support your students in reaching a goal they never thought was possible, build their self confidence, create a peaceful culture at your school and help your students take a stand against bullying.
The Commitment: Coaches/Running Mentors will participate in a 2-hour training day on Thursday, August 29th from 5 pm to 7 pm. Coaches will facilitate a 1.5-hour training twice a week after school with their team. The training consists of both running/walking exercises in addition to the social emotional exercises for self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-management.
Why: Over 70% of students report being verbally, physically or emotionally bullied. DC students have the opportunity to take a stand and say "NO" to bullying. Movement, building friendships and achieving goals helps us to be resilient and promotes wellbeing. Exercise and connecting with others also improves our concentration and memory for learning. The more participants, the stronger our schools and community will be against bullying. We encourage school-wide participation to cultivate peaceful schools.
Call to Action: Please contact Peace Runners at peacerunnersdc@gmail.com by August 27, 2012 if you are interested in becoming a coach and sponsoring a Peace Runners team at your school. Students and coaches will be enrolled on a first come first serve basis.
Peace Runners is sponsored by Resilient Kids LLC, an organization that focuses on social emotional education. There is no cost for students to participate.
