There is a literacy crisis in our nation's capitol, and we need your help. In 2011 only 20 percent of DC's fourth graders were reading on grade level. Research says that the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print, and students who report more types of reading material at home show higher-than-average reading test scores. But 61 percent of low-income families have no age-appropriate books at all in their homes for their children. Come work for an organization determined to beat those odds.
About EnjoyReading
Founded in 2011, EnjoyReading improves the literacy of students in DC's lowest performing elementary schools by expanding access to engaging and enjoyable books and by offering high quality family literacy activities. Over fifty percent of DC Public Schools are without a school library, starting this fall EnjoyReading will increase points of access to high quality literature to families with its unique BookRoom at Stanton Elementary School in Southeast Washington, DC.
EnjoyReading is unique from other literacy nonprofits in four critical ways:
- EnjoyReading works to improve students' regular access to high-quality, engaging, and enjoyable books.
- EnjoyReading works along with students and teachers to improve a school's culture of reading.
- EnjoyReading provides students and families with high-quality literacy activities to improve family literacy.
- EnjoyReading works to turn struggling readers into lifelong readers.
Family BookRoom Internship
Interns with EnjoyReading will gain valuable experience in a low performing urban school and have opportunities to develop relationships directly with the community they are serving.
Interns will provide critical evening staffing of our BookRoom, allowing Stanton Elementary families to check out books to read together at home. The intern, assisted by a rotating group of volunteers, will be responsible to greet parents/caregivers as they are waiting for their child at dismissal, encourage and help them select an appropriate book, and record the selection in the checkout system.
Qualifications:

- Outgoing, friendly and willing to engage school families in conversations
- Ability to work 2 hours a week (from 5:00 - about 6:45pm) , for 10 weeks during the Fall or Spring semester
