ePals' Director of Literacy is a literacy expert with extensive K-12 standards-based online learning experience who will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight for infusing standards-based literacy activities and content throughout the ePals platform and resources. The Director of Literacy will make ePals the "go-to" online site for learning and teaching core literacy skills, reading, writing, collaboration, digital literacy, etc. across the curriculum, consistent with the Common Core State Standards and international standards, with primary responsibility for the content and community in ePals' Common Core Implementation Center, In2Books, the In2Books Clubhouse and the Creative Writing Center.
Responsibilities:
· Evolve thriving online communities of learning on ePals including students, teachers, families, and mentors
· Develop and oversee third party development of online curriculum materials such as projects, tutorials, strategies, contests, teacher guides, etc.
· Ensure the quality, age-appropriateness, and effectiveness of literacy resources and activities on the ePals platform to address the specific needs of students, teachers, literacy coaches, families, and mentors
· Ensure that the ePals' sites are aligned to Common Core State Standards, international standards in literacy, In2Books, and literacy-related research
· Create integrated cross-curricular online learning experiences that encourage teachers to implement projects in the classroom and guide students to use the related materials on the ePals site for homework and independent exploration
· Work with the ePals publishing team to continually refresh the ePals resources with new content and topics from the ePals magazines, e.g., Cobblestone, Odyssey, Appleseeds, etc.
· Build and oversee a team of freelance educators who are developing new projects and curriculum and are actively engaged in creating a user-owned community
Qualifications:
· Master's Degree in Literacy (or related fields, e.g. Reading/English /Language Arts)
· Minimum of 5-7 years school/district-based experience at Middle or High School level
· Demonstrated expertise in Common Core ELA State Standards
· Experience creating and directing online learning and learning communities
· Experience in designing and developing standards-based literacy curriculum and materials
· Hands on experience using social media tools for teaching and building networking communities
· Demonstrated expertise in leading professional development, on and off-line
· Deadline and detail oriented with ability to multi-task
· Strong analytic skills
· Ability to lead by example – be a manager and the leading contributor – including the ability to define, produce and execute upon projects in a independent manner, and possess a strong work ethic and track record for success
· Track record of achieving or exceeding expectations/assigned metrics
· Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications and presentation skills
· Strong organizational skills
· Good technical understanding and can pick up new tools quickly
· Strong history of self-initiated projects
· Ability to work in a high-energy, fast pace entrepreneurial environment
· HTML and/or web design skills a plus
