INSTRUCTORS NEEDED FOR CIVICS PROGRAM
The American Civics Center is seeking civics instructors for its Washington, DC-based educational travel programs. The American Civics Center is a non-partisan civic education organization dedicated to providing quality, affordable, and accessible programs that encourage participants to learn about history, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Instructors work with a group of approximately 22 secondary school students from communities across the United States and around the world as the students explore Washington's public policy institutions, media organizations, monuments, and museums.
Instructors conduct workshop sessions each morning in metro accessible hotels (where attendees are lodged during their stay) located in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington and facilitate seminars held at locations throughout Washington DC area. On two evenings each week, instructors accompany students to social activities at theater venues like the Kennedy Center, meal locations like Hard Rock Café and shopping areas like Georgetown and Pentagon City. Most travel around DC is by private motor coach.
Instructors are paid at the following rates:
- $10 per hour during thirty hours of training provided by American Civics Center
- $17 per hour after successfully completing training
- Most meals are provided or reimbursed during assigned program days.
INSTRUCTOR POSITION AND SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
- BS/BA in political science, international relations, history, government, education, or related field
- Strong knowledge of American history, U.S. government and current events
- Good knowledge of Washington DC's National Mall Area
- Ability to work with students ages 12 to 18 years and pass criminal background check
- Ability to set aside personal viewpoint on an issue to present information in a nonpartisan manner
- Ability to attend and satisfactorily complete 30 hours of training over four days:
- Thu. 01/29/2015 from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm (Arlington VA Crystal City)
- Fri. 01/30/2015 from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm (Arlington VA Crystal City)
- Sat. 01/31/2015 from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm (Arlington VA Crystal City)
- Fri. 02/13/2015 from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm (Washington DC Downtown)
- Sun. 02/01/2015 thru Wed. 02/04/2015
- Sun. 02/22/2015 thru Fri. 02/27/2015
- Sun. 03/15/2015 thru Fri. 03/20/2015
8. Ability to work 8 to 12 hours per day during at least two of following five periods:
- Sun. 04/05/2015 thru Wed. 04/08/2015
- Thu. 04/16/2015 thru Sun. 04/19/2015
- Tue. 05/05/2015 thru Sat. 05/09/2015
- Sat. 05/09/2015 thru Wed. 05/13/2015
- Sat. 06/06/2015 thru Wed. 06/10/2015
