Reading Partners is an educational non-profit organization that matches volunteers, like you, with struggling young readers. Volunteers give one hour one day per week to participate in one-on-one tutoring with at-risk kindergarten-5th grade students who are reading 6 months–2 ½ years below grade-level. With this minimal time commitment, you can help a child achieve success and thrive with self-confidence.
Program Highlights:
· One-on-one tutoring opportunities available Monday through Thursday 8:30 am to 6 pm
· Work with students who are in kindergarten through 5th grade
· No previous tutoring experience needed to volunteer
· Online orientation provides a convenient way to get started
· Easy-to-follow curriculum that equips you to be ready to work with your student
· Support of site coordinator provides connection to school community
Before tutoring begins, you are able to participate in a shadow session to see if this opportunity is right for you. For every month with Reading Partners, our students typically gain at least 1.5 months of reading skills. Your caring attention and encouragement may be the difference between having a student drop out of high school or graduate from college.
For the 2012-2013 academic year, Reading Partners reading centers are located in 11 DCPS and charter Title 1 elementary schools, with tutoring times Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 6 pm. We will work with your schedule to make sure your experience is convenient and fulfilling.
