[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Development Director, Thurgood Marshall Academy

Thurgood Marshall Academy—a public charter high school located in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C.—seeks a dedicated and qualified Development Director to lead it Development team. Thurgood Marshall Academy is the highest performing open enrollment high school in DC and has a proven track record of preparing students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society.  Founded in 2001, Thurgood Marshall Academy currently serves 400 students in grades 9-12, but is in the process of exploring opportunities for growth and expansion. RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Development Director's primary responsibilities are to:

  • Oversee the school's development plan;
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of individual and corporate prospects, including major and planned giving donors;
  • Oversee the Grants Team which works on private and public grant research, applications, reporting, and compliance;
  • Manage the school's fundraising and donor acknowledgement events throughout the year including an annual fundraising gala; and
  • Plan and implement a wide range of special events both independently and in collaboration with key partners, including national charter associations, other schools, nonprofits, corporations, and partner law firms;
  • Assist the Board and Executive Director with long-range strategic planning issues.

 

The specific elements of the job include, but are not limited to, duties listed below:

  • Create annual development plan;
  • Cultivate new individual and corporate donors;
  • Spearhead year-end annual fund campaign;
  • Maintain donor relations through visits, calls, and written correspondence;
  • Plan, direct, and implement the school's annual fundraising gala and other special events;
  • Solicit individual and corporate sponsorships for the gala and other special events;
  • Develop a strategy for increasing TMA's exposure locally and nationally;
  • Initiate and cultivate partnerships and new relationships with potential corporate and community partners;
  • Manage the school's marketing and PR strategy including print materials, website, and press releases;
  • Oversee policies, hiring, training, and professional development of Development staff;
  • Assist the Executive Director with Board development and serve as Board liaison;
  • Manage a staff of three;
  • Report to the Executive Director.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • At least 5 years of fundraising experience, with demonstrated expertise in cultivating individual donors and corporate partners;
  • Additional experience in event planning and capital campaigns preferred;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Excellent oral and verbal communication skills;
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, and Donor Perfect; and
  • Willingness to work longer hours, as necessary.
