[YEP-DC] For High School Seniors: National Youth Science Camp! (free!)

Calling All High School Seniors!

Like science? Want to be a leader?

Attend the National Youth Science Camp!

Each year, two graduating high school seniors selected from each state have the opportunity to do science with real scientists and professionals, hike in the hills, have Q & A sessions with members of Congress and federal science officials, and interact with peers from all over the country and Latin America -- all expenses paid, including travel. Past participants went on to become astronauts, Nobel prizewinners, members of Congress, and business leaders.

DC's two 2012 delegates called it a life-changing experience that prepared them for the intellectual rigors of college. They also had a blast hiking, meeting kids from different states, talking with inventor Dean Kamen, and realizing what a big deal it is to be selected for this honor.

The State Board of Education encourages students from the class of 2013 with strong science and leadership qualities to take full advantage of this incredible opportunity.

Students can find the APPLICATION HERE as well as attached to this email. (.pdf) Applications must be received by close of business on February 15, 2013.

Students must be candidates for high-school graduation between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013, and demonstrate:

  • superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences;
  • an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in school and community activities;
  • skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and
  • curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics

They also must commit to attending all 3+ weeks of camp, which includes a visit to DC.

The 2013 camp runs from Wednesday, June 26 to Saturday, July 20.
