$40/HR- Licensed Reading Specialists Needed (Washington, DC)

CERTIFIED READING SPECIALIST

HungryBrains!(TM), is an National Housing Trust/Enterprise initiative designed to close the achievement gap in our affordable housing communities. HungryBrains! works to close the achievement gap through parental engagement, tutoring, and through enrichment activities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. National Housing Trust/Enterprise is currently providing tutoring support for nearly 75 youth in grades 1-8 in Washington, DC. Youth participating in HungryBrains! receive up to 20 hours a week in tutoring support during the school year and up to 30 hours a week in support during the summer. Each program takes place onsite where our residents live. National Housing Trust/Enterprise is looking for an experienced certified reading instructor to provide support for our children.

READING SPECIALIST DUTIES:

* In cooperation with site coordinators, implement research-based reading strategies to enable kids to develop the competencies and skills to be successful readers.
* Conduct pre/post testing assessments using the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Emerging Literacy Skills) or related system (Pinnell/Fountas) to determine student reading levels.
* Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet learning needs.
* Create reading plans to match student ability and learning styles.
* Advises parents, coordinators, and volunteers on "at-home" strategies to improve reading skills.
* Coordinate family literacy events and programs.
* Establishes and maintains standards to achieve effective participation in all activities.
* Evaluates academic growth of students and maintains appropriate records.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Teaching with an emphasis on reading/literacy.
* License to teach in Virginia, Maryland, and or Washington, DC.
* Deep understanding of research and evidence-based reading practices.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent organizational skills required.
* Strong software and technology skills desired.
* Experience with family literacy preferred.
* Reliable transportation a must.
* Must pass a background check.

NEED:
Reading specialist for HungryBrains!.
* Two positions.
* Spanish language skills desired.

STATUS/HOURS/COMPENSATION:
* This is an independent contractor position.
* $40/hour.
* Up to 4 hours per week September 2014 - May 2015.
* Must be available between 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
