[YEP-DC] Become an AVID Tutor in DC public and charter schools!

Greetings -

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is looking to connect interested individuals to tutoring positions at DC public and charter middle and high schools implementing the Advancement Via Individual Determination College Readiness System, or AVID. Please see below and/or the attached document for more information about becoming an AVID Tutor.

What is AVID?
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination is an approach to building a college-going culture within a school. Students in the "academic middle" enroll in the AVID Elective to teach them organization and study skills and provide support for rigorous coursework, such as AP or Honors classes.
  • AVID strategies, such as Cornell Notetaking, Jigsaw Reading, Socratic Seminars and others, support a rigorous curriculum for all students schoolwide.
  • AVID schools also offer ongoing professional development for teachers, counselors, and administrators.
  • For more information about AVID please see http://www.avid.org/
Where is AVID?

There are currently nine schools with AVID in Washington, DC. We are looking for tutors at seven of these AVID sites beginning either October 2014 or January 2015:
  • Cesar Chavez PCS - Parkside Campus (7th grade)
  • Johnson Middle School (6th & 7th grade)
  • Ballou High School (9th-12th grade)
  • Friendship Tech Prep Academy (9th grade)
  • Friendship Collegiate Academy (9th grade)
  • H.D. Woodson High School (9th & 10th grade)
  • Roosevelt High School (9th grade)
Tutoring for AVID
  • AVID Tutors are integral to the success of the AVID program. Tutors support the AVID Elective teacher 1-2 days per week by working with small groups of students as they collectively attempt to tackle an issue or point of confusion from their classes.
  • Tutors may also perform homework and organizational checks and assist the AVID Elective teacher in reviewing student work.
  • Tutors provide a "near peer" mentoring relationship for students. Ideally, tutors are currently enrolled college students in the DC area. We may consider non-college students, however, all AVID tutors must have a Bachelor's degree or be currently enrolled in college.
  • Most AVID Elective classes occur in the mornings between 8:30am and noon, although a few opportunities exist for afternoon tutoring.
  • Tutors must be willing and able to travel to/from school sites independently, including to sites that are not easily Metro accessible.
  • AVID tutors receive ongoing training and professional development. All tutors must undergo training and a background check before beginning work.
  • Hourly rate for tutoring is dependent upon the hiring school site.
