Please join colleagues and U.S. Department of Education employees for a presentation and discussion about the high school dropout problem, student engagement, and student perspectives.

WHEN:            Thursday, September 18, 10 am - 11:45 am

WHERE:          Barnard Auditorium, LBJ Department of Education Building

400 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington, DC

When two young women in the District of Columbia lose their way in the traditional school system, can their best friend help them get back on their feet? A new award-winning and student-produced documentary explores the complicated circumstances that young people face as they pursue their education goals.

The briefing will include a screening of the documentary followed by a discussion about the high school dropout problem, including student perspectives on what dropping out means; the role of mentors and community organizations in supporting students and their education; and the federal perspective on the high school dropout problem.

Through an intimate view into the lives of Precious, Victoria and Jessica, Doing It for Me tells a story about how friendship, peer mentors, flexible programs and school environments can create a strong support system to combat feelings of anger and isolation that may lead to dropping out of high school. The film challenges common misperceptions and stereotypes of high school dropouts and reveals the complex situations that impact student decisions about dropping out of school. The film was funded through a National Endowment for the Arts grant to the Washington, D.C. Sitar Arts Center, in collaboration with Meridian Hill Pictures. The arts center hosts an afterschool and weekend program where Precious learned about filmmaking.

Co-directors Precious Lambert and Leah Edwards hope Doing It for Me offers viewers the opportunity to empathize and engage with the complicated circumstances that lead young people to drop out. Jessica, Victoria and Precious' journey to better their lives, their education, and their friendship, is an inspiring story that offers hope in the power of education, art and storytelling to change lives.
