Apologies in advance for duplicates to any of you on multiple OT lists.

Joe Newberry Workshop & Concert in Springfield Virginia  Saturday, May 3, 2014

Clawhammer Banjo Workshop  $60 (includes concert)
10:00 am - noon & 1:00 - 3:00 pm

House Concert  $20  7:30 pm

If you haven't heard Joe Newberry perform live, you're in for a treat! He hit it out of the park to an appreciative and enthusiastic crowd in Fredericksburg April 5th. Don't miss this opportunity to hear and learn from Joe May 3rd in this more up-close-and-personal setting.

Joe says the workshop is geared toward intermediate to advanced players, and will feature a mix of famous and not so famous (although they should be) tunes. Both are important. While he's excited to teach some new tunes, he is equally excited to use familiar tunes as a springboard for some techniques that have served him well. Topics he will cover to that end include: "Putting Drive in Your Playing," "Rhythm Tips," "The Fifth String as a Melody Vehicle," and "The Under-used Second Fret."

Originally from Missouri, Joe Newberry has played music most of his life. He started on guitar in his early teens in order to accompany the songs his family always sang. After a brief flirtation with rock and roll, he started playing back-up guitar at fiddle contests. Banjo came next a few years later, and even after all this time, he finds it exciting and fun to play.  He plays in a duo with mandolinist Mike Compton, with Mike, Bruce Molsky, and Rafe Stefanini as the Jumpsteady Boys, and he also fill the banjo chair with Red Clay Ramblers founders Mike Craver, Bill Hicks, and Jim Watson.

Joe is internationally known for his powerful banjo work and is a prizewinning guitarist, fiddler, singer, and songwriter as well.  Not all great performers can also teach, but Joe can sure do both with equal energy, finesse, and humor.  No wonder he is a favorite at camps and festivals!  He has also directed Old-Time Week at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV for 6 years, and is doing so again this year.

Hope to see you in Springfield!
