Job description

Overview

The Sustainability and Energy Division of the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS-SE) seeks (5) results-oriented individuals with excellent communication, data collection, and organizational skills for a 10 month full-time, paid fellowship position to support the agency's waste and energy reduction efforts in D.C. Public Schools (DCPS).

A major new initiative of this program is tackling food waste in DCPS schools. Following the completion of a 10 school organics collection pilot in 2013-2014, the program will be expanding to include all DCPS schools in 2014-2015. This is necessary to meet the Healthy Schools Act target of 45% recycling rate in schools by 2015 and the city-wide Sustainable DC goal of zero waste by 2032.

Each fellow will be responsible for coordinating the expansion of this new initiative in up to 22 DCPS schools. Fellows will receive training, including on data collection protocols, conducting waste audits and assemblies, and managing on-site composting. Fellows will have opportunities to learn about D.C. government sustainability programs and connect with partners in the private and non-profit sectors.

  • Tech-savvy and customer service-oriented problem solving skills.
  • Persistence and creativity.
  • Attention to detail and ability to collect consistent and accurate data.
  • Ability to work well in a team, juggle multiple priorities, and work under tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to share both successes and failures and ask for help when necessary.
  • Enthusiasm for hands-on work involving dumpsters, bins, and everything that goes in them.
  • Associate or Bachelor degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Experience working on recycling, food waste, composting, or school gardens preferred.
