Re: [dcab-l] Ivory ban: Bad Journalism and old news.

Folks,

There is a concern here, I've raised it with Martin and Bourgeois guitars on
Facebook. In my case Brazilian Mahogany and Rosewood. Tribal people have
been CRUCIFIED by loggers (not very often) and those guys need to be put out
of business. But there are dates set on these woods. There is plenty of
old stock. Go online and search on guitar tone woods. You will see many
importers are going out of business, or rushing to get a good stock of
American farmed wood like Black hearted Sassafras and even Osage Orange.
Even if the sale of Ivory is made totally illegal, the possession of worked
ivory not for sale will not be. Imagine agents in riot gear kicking in
granny's door and dragging her and her old upright piano out into the paddy
wagon. Or the Church pipe organ hacked apart with a fire axe and organist
lead away saying "No comment" That is just plain laughable and it hurts the
cause to even repeat headlines like that. Most ivory is already illegal to
sell, but not when it is part of something legally made. This sort of
journalism is the worst type of knee jerk fear mongering. Stevie Wonder
banned form performing with Paul McCartney. Can't have that!

My fix it box WOULD be confiscated if I took it out of the country. I can
legally own the ivory in there, but it is not documentable, and can not be
sold. I know better then to do that. I inherited the ivory guitar nut
blanks, I did not buy them, and I can't use them for anything but my own
instruments. I prefer cured horse bone to Ivory if I have to cut one or the
other. This law works just fine. Why not write an article about the laws.
It is a very interesting subject, an not only with Ivory. Bluegrass Today
would probably publish it, or leaflets at festivals. Teach, don't frighten
I'd think.
B.

Mike, are you disagreeing with Obama? :)

Probably like the Gibson factory fiasco, it's all about the instrument
owner's public politics. Be careful what political junk you post
online. They might check up on you, at the border.

I understand that ivory poaching is a scourge, and I applaud efforts
to reign it in. It is ridiculous that society at large has to fight
this kind of selfish behavior. Let's hope they get this sorted out in
a way that is reliable for musicians.
