Education Manager
Overview
Horton's Kids, a 24-year-old DC educational nonprofit and the 2011 winner of the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management, is seeking a mature and innovative Education Manager to manage our academic programming for inner-city children. Our services include tutoring, family empowerment activities, summer literacy programming, health and basic needs support, educational advocacy, and enrichment activities.
The Education Manager is a mid-level management position and reports to the Program Director. The Education Manager oversees the organization's cornerstone one-on-one tutoring programs at the Rayburn House Office Building and U.S. Department of Education, as well as our annual literacy summer camp.
This position requires evening hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, and occasional weekend hours for Sunday field trips. The Education Manager's time will be spent working at several different locations throughout DC, including our Capitol Hill office, our tutoring program locations, and occasionally our Community Resource Center in Anacostia.

· Children will receive appropriate academic intervention that will help them achieve grade level assessment scores in math and reading because of curricula, learning plans, supplies, and resources that are created and maintained by you.
· Volunteer tutors will receive the support necessary to help their tutees achieve their educational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Manage thrice-weekly tutoring programs throughout the academic year with approximately 100 student participants
· Supervise 2-5 direct reports
· Manage staff, approximately 100 volunteer tutors, and 100 students at Monday and Tuesday evening tutoring sessions in the Rayburn House Office Building, and Wednesday afternoon tutoring sessions at the U.S. Department of Education
· Coordinate and oversee tutoring space logistics
· Develop and implement curricula for Horton's Kids' research-based intervention model in literacy and math
· Manage preparation of individualized lesson plans and academic materials for all students based on intervention model
· Administer ongoing assessments of students' literacy and math skills, and adjust tutoring activities accordingly
· Analyze and prepare academic, behavior management, and attendance data for all internal, external, and funder reports
· Work with Program Director and Grant Writer to develop appropriate academic-year benchmarks and outcomes for funder proposals
· Work with Program Director to develop tutoring-time protocol and expectations for tutors, students, and staff; manage implementation
· Work with Program Director to develop, implement, and monitor Horton's Kids' behavior management system at all tutoring programs
· Manage student participation incentives
- Develop and lead all academic-related trainings for 200+ volunteer tutors, including the annual Tutor Convention at the beginning of each academic year
- Provide ongoing academic and behavior management support for tutors/staff at tutoring programs
· Manage Tutor Resources section of Web site to include all relevant tutoring information for volunteer tutors
· Track student attendance at tutoring programs; report attendance data to funders and for grant reports
· Manage communication with families and tutors about student attendance
Manage six-week literacy-focused summer camp
- Work with Program Director to plan summer literacy camp schedule, activities, and coordinate hiring
· Work with Program Director and Grant Writer to develop appropriate summer-camp literacy benchmarks and outcomes for funder proposals
- Manage all summer staff, volunteers, and campers for the duration of camp at the camp site
- Develop, coordinate, and lead a week-long pre-camp workshop and training for summer staff
- Administer literacy assessments and work with Grant Writer to prepare grant reports for summer camp funders
Essential Experience and Competencies
A successful candidate will have the following experience and competencies:
· Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university
· Proven experience managing large-scale projects
· Experience supervising staff
· 2 or more years of experience in education, particularly literacy and/or math
· Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with inner-city youth
· Sensitivity and respect for the issues facing inner-city families
· Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
· Ability to work at all tutoring programs, summer camp programs, and occasional Sunday field trips
· Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with people from diverse backgrounds
· Meticulous organizational skills
· The ability to effectively manage and prioritize between big picture and detailed responsibilities
· Strong management skills and the ability to motivate staff and volunteers
· Creativity, self-confidence, and maturity
Additional Helpful Experience and Competencies
- Graduate degree in education or similar
- Volunteer management
- Data and educational assessment analysis skills
- Proficiency in Salesforce.com or other information technology systems
Salary:
· $35,000 - $40,000, commensurate with experience
