RE: [dcab-l] the weirdest club of all

Yikes, indeed; as I remember, there were TWO elves

at the Laurel club!  They were quite small…  (is “Midget” a

politically correct term?)

That place also had an impressive “showcase” (behind glass)

which displayed black and white glossies of bluegrass bands

who had played there over the years.  And some mementoes.

Some real bluegrass stars were encased there!

In addition to Rattlesnake Hill band, one time I booked my jazz band

there!  Our piano player thought to use the elf’s piano, which ended

up being held together with “chicken wire and duct tape”.  He had

to actually repair the piano before we did the gig. He got it working!

On another note, many of you probably remember Tiffany Tavern before

the speakers and wiring were installed (by Dick Smith I believe?).  You had

to lug in your own speakers and stands…

I may have missed it in the DC club recollections thread, but I have to say the Pizza Pub in Laurel was easily the strangest gig I've ever played. I mean, wow. The 9pm to 2am time frame was a challenge. Luckily bands were reinforced during the break by an "elf" singing and playing piano. For the uninitiated, this was a "little person" dressed up in a green elf suit singing Tin Pan Alley songs.

Yikes.
