[YEP-DC] Job Openings - Education Specialist (FT), GED Instructor (PT) at YWCA National Capital Area

Education Specialist (Full Time)

Overview: The Education Specialist/Instructor is responsible for coordination of educational services for all participants in the program. Responsibilities include screening, assessment, instruction, and case planning for all program participants. Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to travel to multiple program sites.

Hours: Normal times are Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with occasional evening hours.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Instruct GED classes for day program (primary subjects would be reading and writing, but must be prepared to teach others, including math, science, social studies, personal development, etc.). Provide instructional support to other instructors as needed. Use social justice orientation as the basis for curriculum development, as well plan cross curricular units with other instructors.
  • Conduct workshops on test-taking and study skills strategies.
  • Adminster, proctor, and grade all student post tests (CASAS series of standardized tests) and GED practice tests. Maintain record of all student test scores. Analyze scores and provide appropriate feedback so that students can improve performance.
  • Assist students with accomodations and registration processes for GED test, as well as with any follow-up needed after taking the test..
  • Maintain current knowledge on topics relevant to GED and adult education.
  • Conduct intakes and assessments for the educational component of the program, which includes administering the required Learning Disabilities Screening and assessment.
  • Assist in the identification of resources for recruitment and retention of students, as well as maintain relationships with other education programs in order to make appropriate referrals for students who are not an appropriate fit for this program.
  • Build and encourage community amongst students. Enforce program expectations and maintain program culture.
  • Conduct new student orientation and revise as needed. Teach Student Success course for new students
  • Work with students to create and implement plans for further training or education, including: make referrals to other community resources and or agencies; counsel individual and small groups of students on college application process and financial aid; maintain close working relationships with area Community Colleges and Universities and plan college workshops and visits on a regular basis.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of student Individualized Service Plan (ISP) that incorporates specific, measureable, behavioral objectives and timeframes. Ensure that all ISP's are in compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Review ISPs and case files on a regular basis. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of counseling hours and activities.
  • Work with case managers, instructors, and tutors to ensure that all student needs are being met and to implement continuous improvement plans to ensure that measurable, educational objectives and timeframes are met in a timely manner.
  • Work with Manager of Program Operations to input and maintain client information into case management system and ensure proper filing of client files.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other YWCA/NCA program staff and contractors.
  • Meet with supervisor regularly for supervision and guidance.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings, meetings, and conferences required by all contracting agencies and YWCA/NCA.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly/quarterly narrative and statistical reports.
  • Maintain existing educational partnerships and develop professional relationships with other community organizations to improve community resources for the program.
  • Understand and apply state and federal confidentiality regulations with regard to client records and correspondence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or the management team.

Desired Skills/Attributes:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and computers in general.
  • Positive and collaborative outlook
  • Ability to complete all job duties in a prompt, accurate, and thorough manner

  • Maintains a clean and well-groomed appearance.
  • Able to work independently when required.
  • Organized and self-directed with a comprehensive knowledge of educational and social work counseling principles.

  • Maintain an objective and professional relationship with participants and staff.

Requirements:

Must have a Bachelor's degree at minimum in education or related field (Master's preferred). Must have at least two years' experience in instruction, counseling, and guidance of high school or adult learners or in a non-traditional setting.


GED Instructor (Part Time)

Overview: The part-time GED instructor will be responsible for planning for and teaching GED and ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes and working with the education team to provide quality services to our students.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 20 hours per week, morning hours

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Instruct GED classes for day program (primary subjects would be reading, writing, and math, but must be prepared to teach others, including science, social studies, personal development, etc.). Provide instructional support to other instructors as needed. Use social justice orientation as the basis for curriculum development, as well plan cross curricular units with other instructors.
