[YEP-DC] Join YEP-DC for a Panel Discussion About Teacher Preparation (RSVP Inside!)

Teaching the teachers: A YEP-DC panel discussion on how to reform and strengthen teacher preparation

Sponsored by the American Institutes for Research (AIR)

WHEN: Tuesday, August 6, 2013, 6:30 – 8:00pm

WHERE: American Institutes for Research, 1000 Thomas Jefferson St NW (in Georgetown, Foggy Bottom is nearest METRO station)

RSVP: http://bit.ly/187WUgE

DESCRIPTION: Numerous studies have found that teachers are the most important school-level factor in raising student achievement. As such, much effort has gone into raising the quality of the teaching force in the United States – but with arguably little to show for it. One lever for improving teacher quality is to improve teacher preparation: the selection, training, and credentialing of teachers entering the profession. With this in mind, alternative certification programs like Teach for America, Urban Teacher Center, and DC Teaching Fellows have proliferated, while advocacy and research organizations like the National Council on Teacher Quality have published reports documenting problems with the current system and proposing reforms. Some university-based schools of education, where the vast majority of teachers are still trained, have also begun to rethink their methods and implement innovative solutions.

Join YEP-DC for a stimulating discussion with a panel of policy experts on this timely and critical topic. Light refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details.

CONFIRMED PANELISTS:

  • Alexandra Fuentes, Biology Teacher, Cesar Chavez Public Charter School and TeachPlus Teaching Policy Fellow
  • Meredith Ludwig, Principal Researcher-Education Program, American Institutes for Research
  • Benjamin Riley, Director of Policy & Advocacy, NewSchools Venture Fund and Commission Member, Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
