The mission of the Office of Teaching and Learning is to deliver high-quality instructional resources, enhance classroom practice and scale effective programs to increase DCPS student achievement and prepare all students for success in college, career and life. The Office spans four core competency areas: curriculum, professional learning, enrichments and interventions, and formative assessment. Team members support school-based staff in implementing DCPS's existing academic programs while simultaneously working to rethink and redesign school programming, academic and curricular resources, and educator professional development.
The Manager of T&L Strategies is responsible for actively supporting the Chief of Teaching and Learning and the OTL team by managing multiple projects and priorities and ensuring clear communications throughout all levels of the organization. This individual works alongside the Chief of Staff to serve as a liaison for OTL between Central Office departments and, at times, may represent the Office in community- and school-facing functions.
The Manager of T&L Strategies reports to the Chief of Staff for the Office of Teaching and Learning.
Position Overview
The Manager of T&L Strategies is responsible for actively supporting the Chief of Teaching and Learning and the OTL team by managing multiple projects and priorities and ensuring clear communications throughout all levels of the organization. This individual serves as the primary liaison for OTL between Central Office departments and, at times, may represent the Office in community- and school-facing functions.
In order to ensure that OTL is effectively addressing schools' academic needs in alignment with our Operations Plan and Capital Commitment objectives, the Manager of T&L Strategies will regularly review data and performance metrics to identify best practices and areas of focus. This individual would collaborate with key stakeholders within OTL and other offices to develop action plans, monitor progress, and modify strategies based on results. A considerable level of comfort managing multiple projects and priorities and exemplary communications and interpersonal skills are essential in this leadership role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a member of OTL's management staff and helps drive the formulation and implementation of strategies to meet the vision and goals of the Office and of DCPS
- Supports the Chief of Teaching and Learning and OTL team by managing multiple projects and priorities seamlessly to ensure timely completion of high quality deliverables and key academic objectives
- Manages various office functions related to communications, performance management, and special projects; recommends and implements changes in operations, resourcing, and approach to resolve obstacles to success
- Collaborates and builds strong working relationships with other DCPS senior managers to develop and implement cross-functional strategies supporting the Chancellor's long-term vision of reform; ensures continuous flow and exchange of information within the Office and with the rest of the DCPS organization
- Assists the Chief of Teaching and Learning with presentation of initiatives, strategies, and operational results to the Chancellor, OCAO/DCPS management, and other internal and external stakeholders
- Reviews and analyzes data and performance indicators to communicate needs and progress towards achieving benchmarks and goals set in OTL's Operating Plan
- Partners with the Chief of Staff to increase efficiency, streamline operations, improve knowledge and institutional management, and enhance the culture to support OTL staff based on needs and team feedback
- Develops trusting, confidential, and reflective professional partnerships with Central Office constituents and school-based staff
- Consistently models high expectations for self, colleagues, teachers, and students
- Attends relevant external meetings and conferences to stay informed about latest research and trends; represents the perspective and vision of DCPS and presents specific findings and project results; represents the Office of Teaching and Learning in internal and external meetings
- Responds effectively to urgent requests from multiple internal and external DCPS stakeholders
- Supports and carries out the Chancellor's mission to transform DC Public Schools and close the achievement gap
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 4-6 years of related work experience
- Master's degree and management experience strongly preferred
- Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and strategic planning skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
- Excellent project management skills and a demonstrated track record of success developing and implementing strategic recommendations
- High level of proficiency analyzing data and translating insights into clear action steps towards a defined goal
- Ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities
- Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector and familiarity with the Common Core State Standards preferred
