[YEP-DC] Additional Readers Needed for APIASF General Scholarship Program

Hi Everyone,

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is in need of additional volunteers to complete the APIASF general scholarship read! Volunteer readers have read over 5,000 applications so far but we still have over 1,500 applications to read before the Friday, March 14 read deadline.

Readers assist in the evaluation of applications submitted for the 2014-2015 academic year and are critical to APIASF’s ability to award scholarships to students. Readers have access to a secure website to review scholarship applications at a time that is most convenient to them. Each application takes approximately 10-15 minutes to review. As an added incentive to participate in the read, readers will be entered in to drawings for prizes throughout the read. All readers must have an undergraduate college diploma and/or 7-10 years of work experience. All volunteers, new and returning, are required to review a training presentation online. The training covers basic information related to education in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and provides an overview of the review and scoring process.

If you are interested in volunteering as a reader for the APIASF General Scholarship Program, please complete the registration form here: https://secure.apiasf.org/reader/.

If you are a returning reader, simply log in to your account at the top of the registration page.

For more information, please contact Cecilia Marshall, Director, APIASF Scholarship Program, at cmarshall@apiasf.org or 202-747-7235.

Thanks,

Nicole

[dcab-l] Gair teaching private banjo lessons

A note to all:

Bruce Gair is no longer associated as a banjo teacher at Contemporary Music Center. He will continue for the next two months to lead the "Bluegrass Club" meeting at CMC on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays.

Bruce has developed a plan for lessons which will make them considerably cheaper to the student and more flexible in terms of the lesson program that will "fit" the skill level and time obligations of students.

Students (beginning through advanced intermediate) may now sign up for private lessons on a weekly, alternating week or "catch-as-catch-can" basis ("pick ups"). Rates for lessons are as follows:

Weekly lessons - $100 per month payable at the first of the month (no extra charge if there is a fifth lesson day in the month). "Per month" students will receive make up lessons for all lessons missed for any reason.

Alternating week lessons will be $25 payable at the time of each lesson.

"Pick ups" arranged as the student and Bruce agree will be $25 payable at the time of the lesson.

Lessons are given on Mondays and Tuesdays only, noon to 9:00 p.m., unless special arrangements are made.

The venue for lessons is Pace West School at 15000 Washington Street, Haymarket, VA 20169 (on the left about 3/4 mile east of the Route 15 Sheetz - past the Jefferson Street traffic light.).  The school is in private hands and is being converted to commercial property.

All of Bruce's students, regardless of the plan they are on and regardless of their skill level, are eligible to attend a semi-annual, spring and fall, 4 hour banjo seminar for $20. (Students not registered for lessons with Bruce will be charged $40.)

Finally, all of Bruce's students may call him (at reasonable hours) for immediate assistance with a playing issue or send him an email for a response within 24 hours (no charge).

Please pass "the word".

Bruce Gair

[dcab-l] Tom Henderson Passes Away at 78

Tom Henderson, 87,the founder of the Bluegrass Parlor Band in 1988 and longtime DJ on WMNF radio in Tampa, FL died early this morning after a long illness. Tom's radio program, “This is Bluegrass” had aired monthly from 1971 until quite recently. The Bluegrass Parlor, a retail music store as well as a famous meeting place and instructional center for Florida's young bluegrass musicians, located in Tampa, was owned by Tom from 1980 until he sold it to Jeff Jones in 2005. Alumni of the Bluegrass Parlor Band include the great fiddler Aubrey Haynie, Nashville attorney for David Crow who was for many years fiddler for the Osborne Brothers, Jason Barie fiddler for Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and Florida favorite Scott Anderson. In more recent years Cory Walker, currently touring with Ricky Skaggs and Jarred Walker, mandolin player with Missy Raines, both came through the Parlor Band program. Tom Henderson was at the center of creating this rich load of Florida bluegrass musicians who have had significant national impact. The Bluegrass Parlor was also a venue visited by literally hundreds of bluegrass bands passing through Florida from Bill Monroe to Sierra Hull, the last band to play at the Parlor.

Tom had been ailing for many years, but always maintained an active interest in bluegrass happenings. He was a frequent contributer to the Bluegrass-L, an email List Serve devoted to discussing bluegrass music and matters. Recently, a benefit concert was held for him. He will be long remembered in the Florida bluegrass community and nationally. In 1988, Tom Henderson received an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award. He is survivved by his wife Chris, daughter Karmen and son Rick, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be long remembered. <!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } -->

[YEP-DC] Volunteer Opportunity: Provide a Needed Item for a Teen Parent in College!

Help a teen parent complete college by fulfilling a wish! Generation Hope is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports teen parents (Scholars) attending college in the DC region by providing them with tuition assistance and mentoring support. Twice a year, we give our Scholars the opportunity to create a wish list containing items they need for themselves or their children. These items are the tools for success for our Scholars!

We then work with the community to help provide these items. Typically, Scholars request things like diapers, children's books, grocery gift cards, etc. If you would like to provide an item for a teen parent in need, please sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040D49ABAF29A20-generation4. You can mail/deliver the items to our office (please be sure they arrive by Wednesday, March 5).

If you have any questions, please contact Generation Hope Program Manager Caroline Griswold at caroline@supportgenerationhope.org or 202-642-5649. Thank you so much in advance for your support!
