[YEP-DC] Seeking Nominations for Teaching Award for the Humanities and Leadership Education

Good morning,

I would like to share information about a new teaching award with the group.  The information is below.

Thank you,
Lynn Jennings

The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. (HCWDC) with sponsorship from The Schimel Lode is pleased to offer the Abraham Lincoln Schimel and Beatrice Schimel Awards for Teaching Leadership (ALSBS Lead-In Awards).  The ALSBS Lead-In Awards will be presented to high school educators who are developing and using new approaches to teaching that integrate the humanities and leadership education. Awardees will receive $1250 as a personal award and another $1250 to participate in the development of a comprehensive curriculum guide.

Successful, capable, and innovative high school educators rarely get the appreciation and recognition they deserve, but this is especially true for teachers using and developing new approaches to humanities and leadership education. In The Heart of the Matter, a June 2013 report to Congress, the Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences wrote that the humanities disciplines equip students "…for leadership in an interconnected world," and that "…educators at every level and in every [humanities] subject area need resources, both physical and online, to stimulate learning, inspire student participation, and provide up to date content.  The Lead In Awards respond to this need by rewarding a small prize to teachers who teach leadership through the humanities.

The Council and The Schimel Lode are now accepting nominations that describe innovative approaches currently in use, or yet to be put in practice. Teachers may either nominate themselves or be nominated by other teachers, students, parents and administrators. However, all nominees must be currently employed as full time high school teachers in Washington, DC.

Educators are encouraged to apply online at http://grantapplication.wdchumanities.org . The nomination process includes the submission of an application, resume and project narrative that details the teaching of leadership through the humanities.  The deadline to apply is February 7, 2013.

For more information on the ALSBS Lead-In Awards, please contact Mark Smith, Director of Grants 202-387-8391 or via e-mail at: Msmith@wdchumanities.org.
