Rumi Forum Social Issues Conference Series Education and the State of our Future: Critical issues facing our children Wednesday, April 2, 2014 12.00 – 12.30pm - Registration and light refreshments 12.30 – 4.00pm - Conference Program Copley Formal Lounge, Georgetown University 37th and O St., N.W.
, Washington, DC 20007 SYNOPSIS: This conference aims to highlight critical social, pedagogical and civic issues as they relate to the pre-K to 12 U.S. educational systems in the 21st century. Speakers should prepare to speak for 20 minutes and incorporate one of the following into their presentations as it affects education in America at a local and national level. Early education and K-12 areas should be considered, in light of causes, effects and, in particular, solutions.
Panel 1: "Addressing the challenges of the U.S. education system to provide possible solutions"
* Illiteracy in the 21st century: Perspectives from curriculum, pedagogy and reading motivation standpoint * High-school dropouts: Prevention and improving student behavioral outcomes (truancy) * Young children of Immigrant families and the path to educational success * Improving education outcomes and closing the achievement gaps among low-income children: Issues related to poverty, race and minorities * Teacher training and effectiveness: Setting standards for professional development to deliver a high-quality education * Assessing student achievement and school performance in the light of recent education reform efforts * Preparing students to succeed in college and the workplace * Preschool interventions: Importance of mandatory early education and pre-K (Head Start and Early Head Start) programs * Challenges in special education: Effective strategies and new initiatives to improve learning outcomes Panel 2: "Importance of a safe learning environment (mentally and physically) for our children" * Saying "No" to Bullying: Delivering services and strategies to at-risk youth * Social media: "The good, the bad and the ugly" impacts on education * Combating gang violence and school safety: Prevention and intervention methods. * Discipline and classroom management: Lessons learned from the best practices for better student involvement * Substance abuse and its implications on the education life of our children The audience will include people from academia, think tank scholars, city and government officials, education professionals and NGOs. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Please email your 150-300 word abstract by February 19th, 2014 to be considered for the conference. Please also include a short biography.
