[YEP-DC] Educational Programming Internship @ Beacon House

Notice of Educational Programming Internship Opportunity:

Beacon House is a non-profit, community based organization that provides tutoring, mentoring, cultural, athletic, recreational and nutritional programs to at-risk children, ages 5-18, who reside in and around the Edgewood Terrace community in Ward 5 of Washington, D.C. Our mission is to assist at-risk youth to identify and pursue educational objectives that culminate in college or vocational training, and, more generally, to prepare them for productive involvement in their community and society. Beacon House’s goal is to lift as many children as possible up and out of their often difficult circumstances.

We are currently looking for an Education Program Intern to work alongside Beacon House staff and other volunteers to improve the academic outcomes of low-income 5-18 year old children and youth.  

Beacon House has 7 full-time, and 10 part-time employees.   The Educational Programming Intern would work under the direction and supervision of Gerry Kittner, Executive Director of Beacon House, and the education staff, which includes Elementary Program Director, Middle and High School Program Director, and Volunteer Coordinator.     

 

 

Projects and Tasks:

 

Directly support children and youth, individually and in small groups to complete homework and engage them in learning opportunities through daily lesson plans, educational software, and more. 

 

Collaborate with Education staff and Executive Director to perform various projects that support the facilitation of current and new programs and services

 

Assist in coordination of Monday and Tuesday evening tutoring programs

 

Serve as a tutor for students involved in tutoring and afterschool homework help programs

 

Assist in coordination and program delivery for the Saturday Science Club

Aide in event coordination and facilitation-- this may include field trips, family and community engagement and outreach events, etc.

 

Maintain a safe and secure environment for students, tutors, and space.

 

Requirements:

Be available for 5 to 15 hours per week; Days and times are somewhat flexible, but note that the ideal candidate would be available during the following times:

 

All education programs occur between 3:30-8:00 PM Monday-Friday and

Saturday from 9:30-12:30. 

 

Tutoring Programs:  Monday and/or Tuesday evenings, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  

 

Science Club:  Saturday mornings, from 9:30 to 12:30 

 

Ideal Candidates:

Have an interest in afterschool program development and delivery, urban education, social work/counseling and volunteer coordination.

 

Are reliable, flexible, motivated, creative, and outgoing.

Have experience working with youth and/or a desire to work directly with youth

 

           

The nearest metro station to Beacon House is Rhode Island Ave., Red Line.  Beacon House staff will gladly pick up Intern from the metro.
