[YEP-DC] Revised Campaign Policy and Research Fellowship Opportunity with a Focus on Maryland Education Policies

Primary Responsibilities of Policy and Research Fellow:

The Policy and Research Fellow has the opportunity to engage in policy research, analysis, development, advocacy and implementation in all three of Laurie Anne Sayles Campaign's focus areas (education, health care, and transportation).  Opportunities will be given to contribute new ideas and innovations in a fast-moving campaign environment, as well as learn from expert staff.  This is an entry-level position working collaboratively as part of a small, effective team where every position makes significant and substantive contributions to the campaign. The fellow will work closely with the candidate, Campaign Manager, and Communications Director. Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to:

Assist the Campaign Manager and Communication Director to craft policy and position statements and respond to issue-based questionnaires sponsored by interest groups

Help prepare talking points and position papers for candidate

Compile data and information on relevant policy issues impacting Montgomery County District 17 residents

Providing periodic reports on emerging policy actions that Campaign team should be aware of

Completing or contributing substantially to one policy project or report.

Providing general support to Campaign Manager and other staff as needed

Qualifications Sought in Fellow (skills/background):

Required:

Excellent research and critical thinking skills and a demonstrated ability to learn complex issues quickly.

Demonstrated interest in public policy; any policy-related work experience will be highly beneficial.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to communicate concisely and persuasively.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage and advance multiple projects at once.

Experience working successfully in collaborative, team environments.

Minimum of 20 hours per week required

 

Strong work ethic and willingness to travel within Montgomery County District 17 region of Rockville and Gaithersburg, MD

Commitment to the mission and work of the Laurie-Anne Sayles Campaign

Preferred:

Familiarity or experience working with databases

Demonstrated interest in public policy dealing with education, affordable healthcare, and transportation in the State of Maryland, particularly in Montgomery County

Familiarity with Montgomery County and key voter population

Compensation

This is an unpaid position. We are open to working with select upper level undergraduate or graduate students  and their institution of higher education that are interested in obtaining college credit for this fellowship.
