Introduction

The College Board, a national educational organization, is conducting a search for an Educational Counselor, Educational Opportunity Center, to be resident in the College Board’s Washington, DC office.

POSITION SUMMARY

To provide career, education, financial aid, and post-secondary advisement along with other forms of educational counseling to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing post-secondary education.  Counseling services may include guidance assistance in the following areas: college admissions for two and four-year institutions; vocational and technical schools; adult continuing education programs; GED practice testing; financial aid processes; academic counseling; career counseling; loan counseling; SAT; CLEP; and adult literacy programs. NOTE: This is a term position through August 31, 2016; with a possibility of grant extension.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and recruit a minimum of 525 individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who wish to enter or re-enter a post-secondary institution or continue their education in an alternate form; eligible program participants include potential adult learners, high school students, and high school graduates.  Provide career and post-secondary counseling on an individual and/or group basis with the goal of placing clients in a continued or higher education level program.   
  • Serve as the regional lead for assigned clients and organize, coordinate and deliver services for clients in assigned program areas. Deliver services through multiple approaches by working collaboratively with other College Board units, external agencies, external partners of the College Board, and those organizations supplying services to the College Board.
  • Administer, coordinate and perform various program promotion activities that may include: meeting with outside individuals or groups to provide information about programs and services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Conducting workshops and seminars on career options and post-secondary enrollment, maintain records of contact and provide timely and thorough follow up and tracking on all individuals who receive services.  Writing regular reports; obtaining feedback from outside individuals or entities regarding programs and services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds; and establishing a methodology to gather and evaluate feedback, and recommend changes in programs and/or services.
  • Reach out to local schools, communities, and public and private groups in order to distribute information and materials regarding workshops, counseling and other offerings for disadvantaged individuals wishing to pursue, or continue higher education.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records on each participant/client inclusive of individualized learning plans, compile and submit by established due dates monthly statistical reports, quarterly reports, and annual reports pertaining to related information.  Provide accurate and timely database entries of individuals who have received services.
  • Keep the Director, Educational Opportunity Center and the Assistant Director, Educational Opportunity Center informed of any problems, opportunities and/or issues affecting target communities and disadvantaged learners.

PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS

Internal Contacts:

Maintains regular contact with staff within the department and with staff in other departments for the purpose of scheduling, giving and receiving information and collaborating to produce work.

External Contacts:

Maintains regular contact with members, potential members, faculty, institutions, consultants, students, potential students, parents and other business-related outside partners for the purpose of scheduling, counseling and fostering relationships that will assist in the educational advancement of students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree, plus additional related courses or professional training in educational counseling, education psychology or a related field.  At least three to five years of directly-related, progressively responsible work experience in a professional position in educational counseling or a related field.  Project management and customer service experience are also required. 

Bilingual: English/Spanish preferred but not required

 Related Skills & Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of issues affecting low-income student access to post-secondary education
  • Extensive knowledge of client needs, and the ability to identify and meet the needs of clients and prospective clients
  • Familiarity with the spectrum of College Board programs and services
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to educators and students at various levels, both in groups and on an individual basis.
  • Counseling skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple situations simultaneously
