Job Summary
The Deputy Press Secretary reports to and works with PCSB's Director of Communications to communicate information about PCSB's work to a broad and diverse set of local and national audiences. This will require a diverse array of activities and skills such as providing strategic communications support, assisting in media outreach, organizing speaking opportunities through events and local and national conferences, writing and editing, tracking messages, and other functions.
The PCSB Communications Department is a fast-paced, extremely dynamic team. The ideal Deputy Press Secretary will be an ambitious self-starter, a fountain of ideas and with clear plans to execute on them, an excellent writer and an outstanding communicator able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks. Past experience working with media, conference or event outreach and/or public policy issues is a plus.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Outreach
· Communicate the role, function, importance and accomplishments of PCSB and charter schools through case studies and other innovative means to local and national advocates, public-policy institutes and other audiences.
· Pitch and facilitate local and national speaking opportunities for PCSB staff and Board members
· Develop a plan to take PCSB's message on the road, which could include participating and networking at national conferences and meetings.
· Develop and implement plans for media briefings and press events.
· Prepare, and coordinate content for press kits and materials.
· Attend media and press events relevant to the organization's mission to gather information and make contacts.
· Assist the Director of Communications in facilitating media responses, including rapid communication responses.
· Consistently and proactively pitch stories, letters to the editor, etc. to local and national media.
· Curate PCSB Daily Media Clips, a roundup of local and national charter and education coverage.
· Coordinate and liaison with the network of DC charter school communicators.
· Report out media analytics monthly for Communications team and PCSB leadership.
· Serve as internal coordinator of FOIA requests.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Writing and Editing
· Draft press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, testimony, speeches, annual reports, web copy and other materials.
· Write, edit, and fact-check collaterals including presentations, briefing memos, fact sheets, one-pagers, blogs, briefing materials, and correspondence, keeping all up to date and on schedule as needed.
· Draft and publish Board Meeting Update, PCSB's monthly board meeting communication to stakeholders.
· Draft monthly and subject talking points, developing a recurring editorial review cycle with topics and deadlines.
· Coordinate PCSB annual report development, design, and distribution.
Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
Qualifications and Experience
· Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
· 2-5 years of relevant experience in conference outreach and planning, media relations (local and national) and/or communications, ideally in a communications agency, membership association, non-profit or on Capitol Hill.
· Experience working in a fast-paced environment with a high level of responsiveness.
· Experience working in communications of policy issues a plus.
· Spanish-speaking a plus.

· Self-starter, detailed-oriented with excellent follow through.
· Innovative, proactive approach to pitching communications outlets
· Excellent communications judgment
· High level of attention to detail while also efficiently managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
· Ability to think analytically and work independently -- as well as collaborate with team members, especially on projects and campaigns.
· Flexibility, creativity and sense of humor a must
· Clear understanding and commitment to PCSB's mission and vision
Skills & Knowledge
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills
· Proficient in creating and delivering presentations
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications required; well-honed sense of graphic design preferred
· Basic experience with and knowledge of online media databases, media monitoring services and communications data management platforms (Vocus, Cision, Nexis, TVEyes).
· Experience with message impact tracking and media and marketing analytics
Compensation
Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience prior experience. In addition, a comprehensive benefits package is included.
