About Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS)
FOCUS is a 16-year-old 501 (c)(3) non-profit that works with lawmakers, the media and the public to communicate the benefits of the District's public charter school reform. Since our founding, FOCUS has advocated for equal public funding for charter schools; to free up surplus public school buildings for their use; and to protect their autonomy. FOCUS uses high-quality data analysis to provide key stakeholders with an accurate picture of school performance, enrollment and other relevant information.
Position Overview
The Data Analyst will be a vital part of a fast-moving and influential organization in DC education. A successful candidate will be technical, quantitative, analytical and creative. There are many responsibilities outlined already, but in a small office, there are also opportunities to control your work and create your own projects.
Responsibilities
• Maintain, update and improve FOCUS's database of school- and student-level data. The data is currently housed in a MS SQL Server Database.
• Analyze data and create compelling data visualizations to distribute to DC politicians and government staff.
• Maintain, update, and improve the FOCUS School Quality Dashboard using cuttingedge data visualization software.
• Collect, maintain and analyze publicly-released data, including information on testing performance, enrollment, funding, and facilities.
• Organize and display advocacy graphs on the FOCUS website.
• Fact-check all statistics quoted in external communications.
• Supply our partner charter support organizations with reliable data to support their efforts.
• Other responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
• Strong technical and data warehousing skills. A successful candidate will be comfortable designing database architecture and maintaining data integrity using TSQL code.
• Knowledge of GIS software and programming languages is preferred.
• Strong quantitative skills. The successful candidate will be able to think flexibly about data and statistics to support compelling narratives.
• Strong communication skills required.
• Knowledge of education reform issues preferred.
• Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
