E.L. Haynes Public Charter School was founded in 2004 and has an award-winning program based on effective practices for advancing student achievement. E.L. Haynes is among the top-performing charter schools in Washington D.C., and is recognized locally and nationally as a model and for our exceptional student achievement gains.  E.L. Haynes currently serves over 900 students in grades PreK-10 and continues to grow until it serves PreK-12th grade.

Every E.L. Haynes student of every race, socioeconomic status, ability level, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.  Every E.L. Haynes student will be adept at mathematical reasoning, will use scientific methods effectively to frame and solve problems, and will develop the lifelong skills needed to be successful individuals, active community members, and responsible citizens. 

 

Overview of the Role:

The Math Curriculum and Staff Developer will support teachers through math curriculum development, content expertise, and teaching competencies.  The Math Curriculum and Staff Developer will serve in two capacities:

1.       E.L. Haynes' Math Curriculum and Staff Developer:  Half of this role (0.5 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE)) is to support middle school math teachers (grades 5 – 8) at E.L. Haynes with curriculum development and professional development.

2.       D.C. Common Core Collaborative Math Specialist:  The other half of this role (0.5 FTE) is to provide content-specific support to small teams of math teachers in grades 3 – 9 from DC public charter schools and DCPS who participate in this exciting Race to the Top initiative.   The D.C. Common Core Collaborative consists of over 100 teachers from twenty-two schools (half public charter and half DCPS; half high performing and half not-yet-high performing) who work with content experts to create model lessons based on the Common Core Standards using the Japanese professional development  model of Lesson Study.  

The Math Curriculum and Staff Developer will work closely with the middle school leadership team and report to the Director of Teacher Development and Evaluation. 

The following is a general list of responsibilities; additional duties may be assigned:


 

E.L. Haynes Math Curriculum and Staff Developer (0.5 FTE)

Curriculum & Assessment

?   Ensure high quality, Common Core-aligned units of study for grades 6-8 math

?   Review and lead revisions on math unit plans, specifically examining:

o   the quality of the unit assessments (pre and post) and rubrics

o   the precision of the teaching points

o   the quality of the mini-assessments (formative)

o   the anticipated roadblocks and strategy groups

?   Coordinate with the Director of Teacher Development and Evaluation to assess curriculum progress and share school-wide trends

?   Observe and evaluate the continuity of math instruction between grade levels

?   Organize and participate in walk-throughs to assess degree of curriculum implementation

?   Lead training in using the new middle school quarterly benchmark assessment system

 

Data Analysis and Action Planning

?   Facilitate math department meetings with a focus on strengthening assessments, analyzing student work, and planning for re-teaching based on ongoing assessment.

?   Lead middle school teachers through Data, Analysis, Planning Day analysis and action planning

?   Design and lead sessions for teachers around math content (standards and skills)

?   Analyze quarterly math data; support math teachers in AS3 and At-Risk analysis work

 

Teacher Development

?   Observe teachers and provide concrete, immediate feedback

?   Provide feedback on unit plans, assessments, and daily plans (as needed) 

?   Coach teachers on data analysis & action planning for all students

?   Design and lead professional development sessions for New Staff Institute, Summer Institute, and Haynes U (Haynes U is the weekly differentiated professional development for teachers every Friday afternoon from 1:30 – 4:00 PM)

?   Facilitate math department meetings

 

New Teacher Support

?   Train teachers new to Haynes and Capital Teaching Residents in the use of math assessments, unit plans, daily plans, etc.

?   Provide training on math structures, routines, and procedures (summer & ongoing)

?   Review new teachers' daily lesson plans for first units (or longer, if needed)

?   Provide demonstration lessons or co-teaching support as needed

 

Resource Management

?   Manage ordering of middle school math curricular materials.  Coordinate ordering of materials for classroom teachers so that the school maximizes its budget

 

Leadership

?   Work alongside principals, assistant principals, Director of Teacher Development, and other Directors to ensure the progress of school-wide priorities

?   Participate in the Leadership Team and Instructional Leadership Team meetings

?   Seek out additional opportunities for professional development that will lead to achieving personal professional development goals

 

DC Common Core Collaborative Math Curriculum and Staff Developer (0.5 FTE)

The key activities of the DC Common Core Collaborative include: 

?   Working with a contractor to develop an innovative technology portal for building virtual communities of teachers

?   Convening teachers from 22 district and charter schools to collaborate in the development of superior quality of common core resources that can be shared across DC's schools

?   Creating lesson plans, unit plans, performance tasks and instructional videos aligned to the Common Core State Standards

?   Using the internationally-recognized technique of lesson study, a collaborative approach in which teachers develop pedagogical content knowledge to research, evaluate and refine the teaching of Common Core Standards.  The Consortium's lesson study teams will create exemplar lessons to add to the video lesson library.

 

The Math Curriculum and Staff Developer will provide support to participating teachers in developing pedagogical content knowledge of Common Core Standards.  This support will include:

?   Attending kick-off, debrief and weekly meetings for each of the four 8 week lesson study cycles;

?   Providing feedback on deliverables throughout the lesson study cycle;

?   Providing resources, such as relevant research, lesson plans, assessment items, etc;

?   Attending and participating in biannual Lesson Study Film Festivals.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

?   A belief that all children, from every background, must receive an excellent, college-preparatory education, and are able to reach high levels of academic achievement

?   A track record of successfully serving students with English language learning and special needs

?   Content expertise in math

o   Considerable Math instructional experience

o   Deep understanding of best practices in math curriculum and content instruction

o   Demonstrated ability to create assessment-based unit plans

o   Strong pedagogical knowledge

?   5+ years of successful math classroom teaching

?   Demonstrated ability to coach adults

?   Outstanding written and oral communication skills

?   Strong time-management skills

?   Fluency with technology and online collaboration tools preferred.
