I wanted to share an exciting virtual event that United Way is hosting on Friday, June 21 in support of education. We hope you'll join us via Google+ Hangout at some point during the 21-hour live broadcast and pledge to become a reader, tutor or mentor.
Join The 21: United Way Day of Action on June 21
United Way is partnering with Google to host The 21, a twenty-one hour broadcast of live programming in support of worldwide education. Starting at 3:00 a.m. (EST) on June 21, United Way will broadcast 21 hours of live programming through Google Hangout. This first of its kind event will feature celebrities from the sports world, leaders in the education field, and also everyday heroes who are making a difference in their communities through education. The goal of the day is to recruit 21,000 readers, tutors and mentors for young people.
Highlights include:
- A panel discussion "Making a Difference During Your Lunch Hour" from 12-1pm ET focused on how to get involved in causes online. Panelists include Matthew Slutsky at Change.org, Farah Sheikh at Dosomething.org, and Alison Waldman at SparkAction.
- "Power Hour: A Conversation with Education Advocates" from 4-5pm ET, a discussion with education advocates and leaders about the major challenges and key solutions to address the dropout crisis. Panelists include: Elizabeth King at the Children's Defense Fund, Erik Peterson at the Afterschool Alliance, Helen Blank at the National Women's Law Center, Gary Huggins and Katie Willse at the National Summer Learning Association and Lindsay Torrico at United Way Worldwide.
- At 8-9pm ET, documentary filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson will host "Director's Cut: American Promise," an in-depth conversation on the new PBS documentary American Promise and their efforts to support education on Summer Learning Day.
