Horton's Kids is a 24-year-old, community-based nonprofit that provides wrap-around programs to more than 500 children and their families in Washington, DC's Ward 8. The cornerstone of our model is the thrice-weekly, one-on-one tutoring program in the Rayburn House Office Building and the Department of Education. Our services also include an older youth program, family empowerment activities, health and basic needs support, educational advocacy, and enrichment activities. Horton's Kids received the 2011 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management and was recognized as one of "the best community-based nonprofits in the Washington region" by the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. Key Responsibilities:
Volunteer Management
- Work with Program, Operations, and Development staff to determine volunteer needs within the organization
- Develop strategies to recruit new volunteers based on need
- Manage system of intake for new volunteers, including responding to new volunteer inquiries
- Streamline volunteer application process
- Ensure new volunteer applications are processed in a timely manner
- Develop partnerships with organizations/companies to broaden volunteer base
- Manage long and short term volunteer groups, such as DC Cares and business associations, to ensure a successful introduction to HKids and a rewarding experience
- Schedule and implement new volunteer orientations and trainings, including coordinating outside speakers/presenters for volunteer trainings as needed
- Update Horton's Kids website with relevant information for volunteers
- Track volunteer application and screening requirements, and communicate progress with volunteers
- Communicate schedule and logistics to volunteers
- Organize volunteers for tutoring, field trips, and one-time volunteer opportunities
- Be the point of contact for volunteer questions and concerns about scheduling, logistics, kid concerns, tutoring tips, and the volunteer experience
- Track volunteer attendance and follow-up accordingly
- Recognize volunteer achievements through thank you notes, monthly awards, communicating accomplishments, and occasional celebrations
- Build opportunities for volunteers to meet and support each other inside and outside of programs
- Monitor volunteer engagement and develop strategies to encourage long-term volunteer commitments
- Ensure volunteers have a successful and rewarding volunteer experience through testimonies, focus groups, annual surveys, workshops, and exit surveys
- Work with Development team to engage volunteers in Horton's Kids as donors and advocates
Programmatic Support
- Regularly greet and check-in with volunteers at programs
- Provide additional program support as needed, including managing student behavior, checking off bus lists, procuring supplies, chaperoning children at field trips, etc.
Essential Experience and Competencies
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience and competencies:
Excellent organizational skills, including project management capabilities and keen attention to detail
- Ability to handle multiple projects at once
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Enthusiastic and outgoing personality
- Ability to follow directions and complete work in a timely fashion
- Experience working in database management
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university
- Ability to develop relationships with inner-city youth
- Sensitivity and respect for the issues facing inner-city families
- Experience in volunteer management

Salary
Salary $28,000-$32,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, eligible for performance based bonuses.
